well the 3100 and the 3400 will bolt right on. TICK??? when does it happen, i believe a little tick on start up when its cold is no big deal. just a little more info and maybe we could diagnose the problem...

hang on i'll go get the exact kilometers my car reads now. *it says 263081 km* so i was close, it has a little less. ok if i converted it right, it should be 163,470.90 miles

car works excellent, good gas mileage we pay $1.15 litre right now. *crazy gas prices*

wow i love ur tail lights just noticed them.

I did the math wrong, I multiplied where I should've divided.

Yeah about that, if you buy a new engine, get the 3400. they're cheap like the 3100, and they bolt right in. www.3400swap.com.

They are more reliable too, and have more power.

How is the 3400 more reliable? Last I heard it had the same problems as the 3100.

A little tick shouldn't be a big worry for GM engines. Once they warm up they should go away. Unless it's not going away when it warms up.

You're right it isn't any more or less reliable. It's pretty much exactly the same. Same LIM problems same hyper-eutectic pistons used (which causes most of the tick problems when cold).

It just has more power, that's all.

To the OP, your easy engine choices are:

3100 L82 engines from 94 and 95--direct swap, same engine,
3100 L82 engines from 96 to 99--these engines are the same but have roller-rockers (no real physical difference) and have a different EGR, and perhaps some minor sensor differences; but will swap if you take care of those minor things.

3100 LG8 engines from 00+ --these engines have more power and revisions from the 3400 but with the same 3.1L displacement. Same issues above plus the fuel injectors and rail and regulator must be swapped from your old engine, unless you can get the ECM reprogrammed to run the LG8/LA1 injectors/fuel pressure.

3400 LA1 engines--the same issues as above.

The EGR mounting also changed in perhaps 2002, where the EGR went to a horizontal mount instead of vertical. With these engines you have two things to deal with, the different mount and the EGR itself. Again not a huge problem but something to look out for.

Keep in mind if you swap to an engine from a different car (or to pretty much any LG8 or LA1 engine) you'll have to keep your engine accessories like your alternator and bracket, p/s pump, etc. Also you will need your fuel injectors and fuel rail with regulator with LG8/LA1 engines as the engine will not run right (because they use higher fuel pressure and higher flow injectors and the computer for an L82 3100 engine will not be able to compensate).

3400swap.com is a good recommendation though. There's a wealth of information for your exact car type to a 3400 :)

Lets not forget that you'd have to tap a cooling line in to the the LG8 and LA1. I have no idea why but that's the only difference in the LIM.

I have a 3400 LIM and 3100(LG8) waiting to go in but I'm waiting for school to end and for warmer weather. I'm not sure about the 94 version of the 3100 but the EGR connector for my car and the EGR found on the 3100 UIM i have fit without modification. The 3400 LIM I have has a slightly different mount for the alt and a cooling line hole needs to be tapped.

Looking to port them before I put them in. Gotta find me a good cheap machine shop to do it for me.

I sorta trailed off but if you're gonna put in a new 3100 or 3400 make sure you note the small details.

Yeah, that's it exactly. Any FWD 3100 or 3400 will fit, it's just small little things (good thing you added that coolant line note, I forgot, lol) you have to worry about.

Nothing major though, it isn't a particularly difficult swap. :)

^^ Ouuuu I almost forgot the throttle linkages for the 3400 are different than the 3100s so you'll either need to keep your stock TB or change over the shaft.

That tickin noise that he is talking about guys....could be just the fuel injectors ticking.....just wanted to point it out....

As long as the tick does not sound weird, like a hard tick. I would not worry. It has 163k on it, so it going to make some sounds.
