What's the widest tire size (contact patch) you can put on a 99-03 GAGT, regardless of sidewall size and/or rim size?
So far, I have seen 235/XX-XX.
Has anyone ever tried 245mm wide tires?
Is that even possible without damaging anything?

You may be able to fit 245's, but probably not with the stock rims. You'll need to change to a different offset to move the tires away from the struts, as even with a 225, they're close to rubbing. But then you may end up rubbing on the inner fenders in turns.

theres someone over on GMP with 245s and also claims there is enough room to fit 255s in there too

Shawn,
The offset of the rims I am looking to buy are +38 and are 18s.
Here's an interesting question:
Does it make a difference if the wheel is listed as 18x7 as opposed to 18x8?
I would think an 18x8 wheel would need a wider tire to cover it so that the wheel rim doesn't scrape anything.
Is my logic flawed?

The width of the rim will have an impact on rubbing, for sure. To some extent, using a wider rim will give you a wider contact patch with the same size tire. Only to some extent though.. go with too wide of a rim for the tire width, and you will just end op haging the rims wider than the contact patch.
Conversly, using a rim that's too narrow will bulge the sidewalls (common with off-roaders), but give you a narrower contact patch.
Stock rims are 16x6.5" on the GT with a 225... I wouldn't go any wider than a 7" rim.
