View Full Version : belt noise
Hey all,
I am getting a loud noise coming from one of my belts (not actually the belt but the wheel). I know which one it is but not sure what it runs. I think it may be the water pump belt. Anyone else run into this problem? Anybody know what tha actual unit (wheel) is called so I can lat east address it right.
Thanks

water pumps have been known to make a noise but usually a loud noise would be the alternator's berrings going... but best way to tell is remove the belt and feel which one it is...
as for your car your 1 belt drives everything.. the water pump is the one big round pulley at the front near the top.. the alt is the one on the top at the rear of the engine... check those 2

It is the pulley near the top so I guess as you say that is the water pump pulley. The noise is coming from the inside of the pulley so I guess I just need to replace that.
Ok so the mechanic told me it was the air conitioner clutch that is making the noise. It needs to be replaced.
Anybody know of this problem or have had it fixed and know what the cost is? Just to know.
also my a/c has not been working so I guess this could be tied to that? Or a leak in the system or just needs to be recharged.
Thanks for any replies?

The thing that is making noise is *prolly* the AC Clutch Bearing.
About $19 for a replacement, here:
http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductList.aspx?parttype=450&ptset=A&searchfor=Clutch+Bearings
But that's just the bearing. Lot's of labor to get to it.
And, the clutch itself may be damaged; $89 to ~ $131 for a remanufactured clutch.
Get this taken care of NOW, before the entire comprssor is destroyed.

Yes, your refrigerant my be low and may need recharging.
But that's not your current problem, and you can't even check the system until you replace the warn/damaged parts.

You need tools, experience, adn instructions to replace these compressor clutch parts.
It's DIY for somebody knowledgable, and the procedure doesn't involve removing the compressor from the engine nor the hoses from the compressor.
Hope this helps.

hello,i had same thing happened to me so i went to the junk yard and got me a good looking compressor for 45 bucks, installed ,recharged with the proper refrigerant ,in my case R12 and is all nice and quiet now ,i will mention this, fooling around with other types of refrigerants will eventually kill your system so stick with what it was designed total cost? 100 incl the freon,at this point replacing the entire compressor is cheaper, but you need to know the proper way of recharging the system ,another topic
