View Full Version : Which Rims? (caution 56k)

Ok guys, I know that these pictures aren't all necessarily of my car, but I want some input on which rims to get.
For the moderators:
Before you decide to move this to a different section, its about handling/tires/rims, but it is also appearance. I also wanted to get a broader feedback than just from either one of those forums, so please leave it here
For everyone else:
Ok, so here is my car as of now (more or less)

Now the two styles of rims I am considering. Please let me know your opinions. I want lightweight rims so I don't sacrifice performance, keep that in mind.
Style 1:
17"
$160/wheel + tires + mounting/balancing
EDIT:: Free shipping

Style 2:
18"
The guy was asking $1200 shipped, but I would be a local pick up. Also, not too many people seemed interested. They come with 235/40/ZR18 Yokohama AVS ES100 with 80% tread left.

If everything goes right, I will be getting some rims in the next month or two. I was hoping sooner, but I can't get as many hours in at work while I am taking a summer class.
EDIT::
Here is the Centerline photo gallery in case you want to see more:

go with style 2, they are hot man, but idk...some gunmetal or non-chrome rims might look good on your car too, hell, anything would! ;)

Id go with #2, viper took great care of those rims -- but really, either are a good choice as far as looks and performance goes... I believe the first ones are slightly lighter

I like the frst ones the best.
I'd go for the first ones.. And if you hurry, there's a sale on some really nice summer tires in 17".

definitly number one . That would set your car off nicely!

Of those to choose from...#1
For some reason #2 looks like they would be good on a GP or something...
Anything will look hot on it Dave! :thumbup2:

My thoughts exactly... but it's your ride man, do what feels best to you!

So right now, it the voting is 6-3 for the first style...
The only thing that I am concerned about is whether they will look too small in a 17" size. There is no way I would go with 18" because they would cost ~$100 more per wheel. What do you guys think about that?
Also, feel free to make suggestions, I'd be willing to consider other rims as well.

what do you guys think of these? they're 26.5 lbs and 18" so it would be a definate sacrifice in performance, but I like the looks. plus they are 8" wide...

17s and 18s both have their pros and cons...
17s will give a smoother ride, and you wont have to worry as much w/ denting and rash.
18s do look better in most cases
either way, rims are rims and they will look good in either of those...i sometimes regret not getting 18s though, but when i see someone crusing with big, ghey chrome rims i like my 17s...lol

lol...
something else that I have started thinking about is the width. Those Centerline rims are 7" wide, which is 1/2" wider than stock. Although that means a larger footprint, it also adds some more weight. What do you guys think about width?

go 8" man...so much better....gives it that powerful look from behind and when turning!

I'd have to get the 19" Centerline rims to get 8" wide, they only offer the 17" with a 7" width :(

Yeah its up to you man, the width doesnt matter that much...i just like the looks of the wider tire.

i was origianlly looking at your option 1, but in 18". it wqas too much money so i went with my konigs.
i really like the 17s, they are a classy design. nice and clean, to keep all eyes on the rest of the car, not distract them.

I think #1 rim's are nice. You should look into getting rims similar to Katie's. lol (katie your rims are hot!!!). I imagine lots of companies have something similar to that, and the style of a 5 spoke rim will never deminish. They've been popular for decades and will continue that way also. After all, you don't want to get something that might be popular now, but a year from now, be out of style and have to get new one's, right? Good luck, and keep us posted on your choice!!!

no 17's thats for sure
Bouchie11982
06-01-2006, 07:21 AM
why no 17's? yea it may be an inch more then the stock, but is that the only reason?
He thinks they're too small.
I think they're the perfect size.
Advantages of 17":
-Wheels/tires are cheaper
-Less likely to bend on potholes (less rubber = less protection)
-Less unsprung weight (suspension doesn't have to work as hard to control the wheels)
-Less rotational inertia (engine doesn't have to work as hard to accelerate and brakes don't have to work as hard to decelerate)
-Lots of good tire choices available for 17"
-Short enough sidewall for good handling, yet still enough rubber to help protect wheels
-Minimizes "tiny brake syndrome (http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57597)."
-Yet still big enough to fit a BBK under
Disadvantages
-Don't look as nice (subjective, of course - I think that 18"+ on a otherwise stock GA makes it look like it's wearing highwaters, and then you have tiny brake syndrome).

the width doesnt matter that much
 sorry I dont' know where my mind is...
Anyways, I like the first ones too. The 18's would look nicer, but as Foxy said, the 17 have some great advantages. :)

Yea, I think I want to go with the first choice. I may do a little more searching to see if I can find some similar to Katie's that are lightweight.
Thanks for all of your opinions guys! I posted this at Aleromod.com as well, and the majority of them responded with "keep looking" and nothing else. I like this place better :)

Wider wheels/tires do have downsides..
-More weight
-More susceptible to tramlining (following grooves in the road)
-Worse aerodynamics
I'm sure there are others..
But wider wheels do support wider tires, and in general, the more rubber you can get down on the ground, the more grip you can get around the corners. Note that this applies to dry tarmac primarily... don't want wide in snow.
If you look at tire specs, they will specifiy their width, and specifiy a recommended wheel width. This helps support the sidewalls better. Look at a stock GAGT on 6.5" wide wheels with a 225 width tire.. see how bulging the tires are? An STi has 225 width tires, and they use a 8" wide wheel (for 2005/2006) for better support of the sidewalls. Yes, you can cram on ridiculously wide tires onto ridiculously narrow wheels (I've seen Hondas stuffing like 255's onto 5" wide wheels at autox's) but those are specialized situations..
I'm personally shooting for 8.5" wide wheels with 245 width tires on my car... if the GA can support wider.. I'd go correspondingly wider as well... Width does matter.

I have been thinking about it for a while, and I am beginning to think that I like 17" more on GA's.
I just got an email back from Centerline, those first rims are just under 16 lbs. each... Very tempting, but I think I will look around a little more first.

NO dave, NO.
With the SC/T kit it will look better with 18s. Believe me, you will wish you went 1 inhc bigger if you buy 17's. Just do it, it will look better and flow better.
Also before you buy the rims, have someone photochop them onto your car. thats what i did. just remember
if u dont get 18s, you will always regret it. PLUS it will make your car with the SC/T kit look amazing. Look at toms' for example.

id say style #2
16 lbs for 17x7? That's pretty lightweight, I'm impressed! I'd definately go with them, then.. match them with those Goodyear GS1's that I posted the deal on in Handling... I think you'd be happy with that setup.

wow, this thread is back from the dead...
sorry, don't know how much the stockers weigh.
I'm probably never going to auto-x this car, because its my daily driver and I don't want to beat the hell out of it (AND I am still in college, which = better things to pay for). Sooo, I decided to go cheap and got some used Eagle 077's. What can I say, the rims and tires (with only 3k miles) were less than the 17" Centerline rims by themselves, and about 1/2 as much as Alex wants to get for his (those 18" centerlines posted above). I am waiting to put them on because there is a little flaking I want to take care of. I am going to tear off what is sticking up, then put a clear coat over the area that is exposed to try to stop it from flaking more. The wheels are not perfect, but if you're not up-close inspecting them for flaws, then they look d@mn good.
And I'd be pissed if I were Alex, too. Those are some nice looking rims that he hasn't been able to get rid of. There's a thread around here somewhere that gave all of the different cars with a 5x115 bolt pattern, I hope he's posted at forums for them...
