View Full Version : I wasn't looking for another car, but ...

... the opportunity came up and since my daughter is getting her license, plus the wife is gonna have to very soon start driving to work instead of taking the bus, I thought this might not be too bad ... anyway, I "really dislike" foreign cars and I "almost hate" Hondas but for $500 I really couldn't pass it up ... nothing to special, I guess, but it is a 1991 Honda Accord Wagon EX-R (yeah, I know, but it is kind of unique) with tons of options ... everything works too, including the A/C and it has 168,000KMs ... it needs a set of tires and a little body work here and there, plus, a few odds & ends with regards to maintenance (plugs, wires, air filter, etc) but I think it is a fairly decent little car for the money being it runs like a charm ... now, I don't like the style, it is too damn small and it doesn't suit me but it will probably work out great for the wife and daughter ... besides, it has got to get better fuel mileage than my truck

The inside is fairly clean and with a little vacuuming, it will be perfect for the purpose I have in mind for it :)

A car is a car i believe. whatever can be offorded.

alright, alright DAWG -- this is how we gon' do it. First we need them rimz, im thinkin' 20s or 21, full chrome, then we hit it with a huge exhaust pipe, maybe 5, 6, 7 inches around.. alright stay wit me now. Since its a wagon, maybe 6, 10 subs if you feelin' it in the back, 6 screens, NO NO! 12 screens on `da inside... We can even drop in the NOS floormats alla round, NOS steering wheel cover, and NOS seat covers for extra horsepower, dawg!! Alright after that, lets slap on a bomez mody kit, and paint then entire car lightintg orange, dawg.. ITLL BE TIGHT ! YO!

Sorry Kel, I couldnt resist. :ricer:

I hope you have fun with it, or someone has fun with it anyways :P

My secretary at work has one in a gold/tan/champagne colour and she seems to love it, comfortable, easy to drive, does good on the highway, great gas mileage, and nothing has fallen off of it yet, so Id say its a pretty reliable car, hers has near 120K miles on it now, and gets by on simple maintenance, tires, brakes, oil, fluids, and one refridgerant refill so far. She picked hers up for about 2700 USD IIRC, so the price sound quite fair for what you got (I do believe she got the EX model, however)

Congrats on the new daily beater Kelly!

I remember when you were always surprised on where I'd find my cars for under $500 in 'not bad' shape. :)

500 bucks.... less then 200,000 km... you hit the jackpot on that rig man... I know you hate hondas, but that thing has tones of life left in it... its just getting broken with that milage !!!

congrats on the find... my bro had an accord and he beat the livin snot out of for allmost 2 years, it had like 250,000 on it, and he sold it for 2300 bucks, bone stock!

Is this the car you were telling Karen about? Either way, congratulations on the new daily driver! :thumbup2:

Yeah Shawn, that is the one I talked to Karen about ... the other guy decided he didn't want it  ... anyway, I got all the 'service receipts' last night and they have EVERYTHING listed that was done to it back until 1994 when it has 70,000KMs on it ... and let me tell you, this thing was very well maintained and ALWAYS at a local Honda dealer ... the main thing I was looking for was that the timing belt was changed and it was, at 100,253KMs  ... anyway, gonna transfer it today into my name and then start at some of thw work it needs but over all, can't really go wrong for $500 :)

I wonder what a EX-R is.. I can't find any mention of it in trustworthy sources online... they only mention LX and EX trim levels.

Still, nice choice. Nothing wrong with a station wagon, and being a Honda, it'll last you a long time.

Foxy, it's probably a Canada-specific trim level. I know I've seen them around before, not really that uncommon. The wagon is, well, uncommon though.

You're right - right after I posted, I found a listing of Canadian trim levels, and they get the EX-R. Damn crazy Canuks and their funky trim levels!

Not sure it would be worth quite that much but I certainly hope that I would be able to get my money back :)

I think the main difference is the EX-R has a sunroof... and maby some gold lettering for the badges??

Nice find Kelly, but god it's ugly!
We bought a 95 Grand Prix SE sedan for 1200$ (with only 91000km) as a family beater last summer. So far it's been good to us.

cool, now make it fast. Theres a guy around here with a gold wagon that has a turbo LS motor in it that puts down like 400-500whp.

If you look for my thread about me dynoing my car, theres a video, and in it theres a shot of him dynoing the car too.

Thats good. If the car had over 130 KM's and no timing belt change, it's days were numbered; and its an ugly thing when those belts do snap.

Nah, it's ugly Kel. But that's okay - it was cheap!

I've actually been considering buying a $500 beater, as the Riv will need some work soon and may be down for a week or two. But may be able to just borrow someone's car in the meantime...

Your new Honda does appear to be in good shape, so $500 is a steal!

good deal kelly. Let me know when your done with it. I have a friend that just loves the Accord wagons. Something to do with they look hot when you put money and rims into it???? I dunno, but I'm certain he'd drive to NS to buy it from you whenever your done with it. I guess they a hard find. Now another friend of mine has had 2 honda's in the last year, and both of them burn oil like crazy!!! So watch out for that! I heard it's a common thing for handa's to burn oil. Good luck with it, and nice little car!!!

Ahem.. nothing wrong with a Honda folks.. they're a good durable car, Kelly it will fit the purpose well.. beat on em and they still keep going. :) Mine has just hit 223,000 kms and it's a 92, still runs well, no knocking or ticking in the motor and it doesn't leak or anything. It's the best car I've owned so far. Hope your daughter likes it. :)

BTW, did a BUNCH of work to it last Friday and it now runs like a charm :)

1. Replaced driver side outer cv boot.
2. Replaced rotors and pads.
3. Repaired power steering hose.
4. Replaced valve cover gaskets and spark plug grommets.
5. Changed spark plugs.
6. Replaced front and rear wipers.
7. Replaced air filter.
8. Changed engine oil and filter.
9. Poured in fuel injector cleaner.
10. Installed and balanced (4) 'used' tires.
11. Replaced rear view mirror.
12. Glued passenger side inner door handle bezel.
13. Glued cigarette lighter bezel and replaced element.
14. Repaired the HOT-COLD dash selector switch.

Couple more things to do but nothing serious as it passed safety inspection :)
