1. Can it be easily done?

2. Is there a compatable manual transmission?

3. How reliable is this motor?

4. What will be required for the swap?

Thanks
Jason

hey there. i own a 94 grand am and my car has the 3100 in it so you should be able to just swap it out. I havent had any problems with my motor.

going from a 4cyl to a 6cyl engine in any car will give you problems, you will need to most likely cut out the old motor mounts and weld in the ones for the new engine, change the entire wiring harness, use the ecu from the donor car. I have no idea if the trans you have will work with the 6cyl, but i suspect that it wont. People have done a 5speed swap on the 3100 autos, so do a search on that and you'll find the info you need.

As far as getting all of this together, you're going to want 2 entire donor cars, one for the engine and harness, etc, and one for the trans and such.

So, in short, this is not an easy swap to do at all, and it is definatley not for a beginner to tackle.

2.3 dohc would be cheaper

if you have an auto tranny the 3100 wouldnt bolt up to the 3 speed auto. if you have a manual it still wouldnt bolt up... i would get a 3300, but that is just me being biased...

That would likely be the most difficult swap within the 92-95 chassis. Wiring would be a nightmare - changes were made between 93 and 94 that will affect the engine harnesses (like change in PCM location due to airbag module being added). In other words, might not be as simple as pluging in the harness from the donor car - you'll prolly have to modify it. Yes, you'll need to cut out and weld mounts too.

I would get a different GA or consider a swap within the 2.3 family instead. 2.3 DOHC LD2 if you just want reliability and ability to retain your auto trans. 2.3 DOHC HO + 5 speed if you're looking for speed. You can use your existing sensors, wiring harness, and even PCM from your SOHC.

i have a 94 grand am and when i bought it, it had just been engine swapped with the 3100 v6. i don't knwo a thing about these vehicles right now or there engines. the engine orginally came from a newer grand am (newer then the 92-95 models) anyways how is this engine. should i be happy that it was swapped? and also could the engine swap be the cause of my whole vehicle vibrating when i hit 120km. any kind of info would be greatly appreciated. thanx

Sounds like it was just a replacement. If the car originally came with a 3100, the 8th letter in the VIN will be "M". The newer versions have a few revisions, but mostly after 1998... so it should essentially be the same as the original engine.

Vibrations are usually suspension/tire/balancing/ailignment related.
