Are the K N filters really better than a Fram filter? I'd like to get more air flow with the stock ram air set-up. I see it looks like part of the airbox extends into the fenderwell, but I don't know if it acually has an opening. If not has anyone tried to open that up? I'd really like to stick with the stock setup if possible. 2001 3.4 V-6

Yes it flows better. It uses oil soaked cotton mesh instead of the dry fiber that fram uses....fram is crap actually.
The part that goes into the fender does open up right behind the headlight...it's a resonator to keep the intake quiet.
Going to a K&N filter will help performance wise a little, but a CAI is the way to go. :)

The best thing about K & N is that when the retards at Jiffy Lube aren't paying attention to your air filter or just trying to screw you over in my case, and they ask you to replace it, you never take your car their again afterwards, and then inform their regional office about your visit.
Seriously, I had some idiot Jiffy Lube guy tell me my filter needed to be replaced, along with a few other things. I know that is one of the less then decent places to change your oil but, I was in a hurry before a road trip and the stupid ass mechanics in Minneapolis were on strike. No choice but the Jiffy Jews (No offense to anyone jewish, I part jewish also, lol)
I just laughed when he told me. I asked him if he even looked at it, he had the nerve to bring me out a different air filter then what was in my car. This was the store manager mind you. I always play dumb going into those place just to see what they pull. I ended up having a nice conversation with some regional Jiffy Lube manager after all was said and done. The guy got fired, and I got 4 free oil changes. I gave them to a friend as I was not about to deal with that sh!t again.
Cool part about K & N, you can recharge it when it gets dirty. I do mine about every 2 to 3 oil changes. But yes CAI is the best way to go. K & N is a cheaper small performance increase and saves you replacing the filter for 1 million miles.
That is about the best part of a KN&N.. Nice story, Doc!
I put one in my old TS waagon and never noticed a difference. I've seen tests which show that yes, the KN&N filter flows better, but it also doesn't filter as well as other types. Tradeoffs, I suppose.
Just don't overoil your KN&N if you get one. That can cause problems.

What about smoothing out the air box? Taking out the intake resonator?

I'd like to cut a bigger hole in the resonator and put a K&N filter and see if more air flow would result in more power.

No it's sealed at the end , so cut the resonator off so the end is open in the fenderwell , so now the airbox has two sources of cool air . ( assuming you have Ram Air )

Paper filters have far better filtration than gauze style like the K&N. However oiled gauze flters flow better because they are open cell and relay on the oil due to the dirt and stuff sticking to the oil as it passed though.
Most gauze style filters flow simular and don't show much difference. Actually, from testing the 'Green' filters proved to flow better than even the K&N, but not by enough for it to matter. So between the K&N and say a Fram Air Hog I would go with whatever one you can get cheeper or is easier avalible.
