Want to do the staggered look and need to know whats the widest tire you can get for a 18x7.5 wheel? Right now I have a 225/40/18.
I was thinking about just getting 19's for the back but I don't feel like buy 2 new rims and tires, just rather buy some beefier tires for the back
It depends on the tire as most of them have different widths.
For a 7.5" wide tire, though, I think you would max out at about 235 (maybe 245, depending on tire). If you have a tire you like, look at the manufacturer's website for the tire. They will list the recommended wheel width for a particular width tire.

haha, Ive got the staggered going on by accident (but you know how retarded I am with wheels and tires)
17x7.5 up front with 215/45 rubber
16x6 in the rear with 215/50 rubber
its cool for a littl ewhile but then you start getting pissed off when you have to rotate them!
And I hate Kumho ASX, both of mine are flat in storage now, won't keep air in them for more than a couple days, I think those assclowns at discount tire didnt seal the beads correctly :(
ANYWAYS, back to your post (enough of my threadjacking)
Id stay safe with 235 section width, but Im sure if you havent lowered the car alot (you have intrax, right?) then 245 will work, but it may be close... maybe go lower in aspect ratio to get 245 under there without problems (the tire shouldnt rub on the fenderwell, since its hollow) However, making the rear tires wider will induce more understeer if I recall correctly, but it really doesnt matter since the GA is king of the understeer anyways

With a FWD car it's not advisable to run different size tires ( especially wider in the rear ) as it upsets the handling . Also if you have ABS and the tire is taller etc. it's gonna effect it ....

Oh yea, i forgot to mention that with different tire sizes (as I often have, more often not by choice, but by necessity)
your ABS will come on i fyour tires are different sizes, something with the ABS sensor or speed sensors present at all wheels leads to confusion for the ABS system. (however my ABS hasn't worked since I bought the car, so no problems for me :D)

bigger and wider tires won't fit on the front, only thr rear.
Just want something thats slightly different but still noticible. Want to be a little more domestic and do something different then what others do,most just slap on some tires and don't think anything about it.
Plus the rear feels loose in corners and turns anyways so wouldn't a wider tire in the back help, along with STB and sway bar?

My rear is a bit loose as well - sway bar and the wider tires shoudl tighten it up, I dont know exactly how the wider tires will effect the geometry with the rear sway bar (Paul has a good idea for a nice beefy rear sway, if you are interested)
Also, I too know the woes of not being able to fit larger tires under the front, there is no damn clearance up there. You would think that wth a FWD drivetrain, GM would give us a bit more room up front to work with :( Needs stronger wheel bearings as well.

I wasn't suggesting you actually put wider tires in front , just that it would help the oversteer situation , you could put wider tires in back for the look, but understeer will be more pronounced . A rear sway bar and brace would be a great help and you'd get better handling for sure . Also keep in mind wider tires are gonna have more mass and rolling resistance , so unsprung weight ( bad for handling / braking ) will increase as well as fuel mileage will decrease some .

you can go up to 235 on those rims.
to help the rear handle better add some weight to the rear. our cars are too weight biased in the front. get a heavy subwoofer box in the trunk, pronto!

oh I know, its all good, just said that for future readers.
Yea Im definately looking to put a rear sway bar and a STB in the rear as well.
I got a subbox back there but its just a lil ol JL W3 in a 1.75cubic ft box and a Kicker amp.
I figured 235 was the widest for that size wheel.

whew, Im lucky. Kuhmo does make a size that I want.
How does 235/50/18 sound? Im thinking th 50 will help fill the wheel gap in the rear. Or should I stick with the 225 and go with a 50?
I think it'll look like a 4x4 if you get that tall of a sidewall...
For those of you complaining about the lack of tire width.. has anyone ever rolled their fenders? That ought to be good for another 10mm or so of tire width..

not really. Couple of my buddies have Dodge Neon SRT-4's and they come with stock 17's with like a 50 or so sidewall. Like 215/50/17. Atleast thats what my buddy has on his.Doesn't look bad plus he lowered 2inches and the tires fill in that gap if he would have 40's or so
