I am having troubles with my car on startup and there is a high pitch noise coming from the alternator, so right now my hubby is trying to take it off...any suggestions? :argue: This car has caused so many arguments between us :(

There is a link on the old pages that shows exactly how to
change your alternator. Just scan through and you should
find it. If not the Great people hear can tell you.

My car makes this noise sometimes when i start it up and it's a real cold day . It goes away after about 10 - 15 seconds . It sort of sounds like the belt is slipping on the alt. pulley or something . I heard the alternators were bad on these cars , so i wonder if thats what's going on ?

it might be your steering pump. when its cold it takes a bit to warm up. no biggie

:) So the noise may be nothing to worry about eh ? The belt is tight and doesn't look worn or anything . And the power steering fluid is O K . That's a neat GA convert , Did you use the top from another car or modify one ?

It might also be bearings going out. As soon as it spins long enough the metal gets hot and shuts up.

Grab the pully try to make it wiggle pulling up/down and pushing in/out. If therre is much movement you might want to have it checked.

I checked the bearing today and there is no play . The belt looks good as well . It only does it when it's very cold . It didn't do it today because it's above zero for a change . Couldn't hear any piston slap either .... HA HA .:D

Our mechanic came down today to see about the high pitch noise coming from my alternator, and well the noise was gone! I couldn't believe it. It didn't even hesitate. Could it just be bad in the cold weather since today was a good 30 degrees out or more? Do I need to get a winter beater so my baby girl can run in the summer? Is it possible???

I know my car, same as yours, sounds like a totally different car in this cold weather.. 10 degrees seems to make a big difference.. at -10 and below (celcius), sounds like the car is going to rattle apart.. above 0 though, sounds like a dream ride.. hehe..

for the most part, if it goes away, you are ok.. but could be a sign of troubled component to come..

Sorry about your bad luck.. when I got my GA, I had to put in a new alternator less than a month or two after :|
