My 97 2.4l is an auto and the engine needs rebuilding so i bought a totaled 98 cavy with the engine and trans in it with all the wiring. I am trying to figure out if I can swap everything??? I have no clue what transmissions are in each cars because I am not a trans guy. All I know is that mine is a 97 auto from the 2.4 and the cavy is a 98 with a manual 2.4. Anyone know?

im pretty sure its the same trans, but youll run into trouble swapping things over becasue the shifter in the cavi wont work in the GA IIRC. Im also not sure the linkages will work right. When you swap engines you'll need to use the GAs downpipe and such as well, not the cavaliers,
But yea the trans itself will work but youre missing alot of parts to make the shifter assembly work. Im not an expert on this, so im sure others will have more input and better info than myself, but i figured id toss inwhat I do know.

The 5-speed in the 2.4 Cavy is the same trans that came in 96-98 2.4 manual GA's. The trans will work, but as mentioned, you'll need many other components...
-CV drive shafts for manual 96-98 GA
-96-98 shifter assembly
-96-98 manual shift cables (2)
-clutch pedal
-brake pedal
-neutral safety / cruise cancel switch
-clutch master cyl assembly and reservoir
-slave cyl and throwout bearing (must be replaced with new one when trans is removed/installed)
-clutch
-flywheel
-center console mods
What I'm not positive about...
-trans mounts (possibly cut from a donor manual GA and weld onto yours)
-PCM - not sure if the PRND wires can be jumped permanently in D, or it if will require more to keep the PCM happy.

the drive shafts form the cavy won't work right? Also, the car has the cables, pedals, master cylinder, and res....everything is still in the cavalier. Will any of it work for the grand am?

No, pretty sure they are different lengths.
The rest of that stuff... you'll have to cross-reference each part number to find out.

If you can get yourself a VIN# for a manual trans GA, then you can go to a GM dealer and have them flash your PCM for a 5speed car. Darkfox on quad4forums.com did the swap, but used and NVT55 (or whatever the name is) and he get his pcm reflashed like i mentioned.
