I have a 3.1 in a 96 Grand AM SE with 135K. engine has loud knocking that varies with engine rpm and is heard during acceleration and deceleration. sounds like it coming from the oil pan. so I'm figuring a rod bearing is gone.
has anyone replaced the rod bearings by taking off the oil pan?

You can't do it that way if the rod bearings are gone so is
the crank,,you can't put new bearings on a chewd up crank.
If it was my car i'd be looking for a good used motor and
swap it out....

This actually just happened to me. I bought my first GA, 1996 GA 3.1 V6 w/ 158k miles, engine blows (rod bearing) 3 days later...now 2 months and 950$ later I got my car back with a swapped engine that has 62k miles.
When it happend I basicly lost all power, knocked real bad at 2k rpm then above, took about a minute to get a 60mph, basicly then I knew it was dead.

yup,,finding a good used motor and swapping it out is
the best and easiest way to do a job like that..
