Hey everyone I have been talking to a seller on ebay about providing us with the cavalier front and rear STB. But he would give us the rear bar the same as the front bar which as discussed in other threads will work on 99+ GA's. I will have a price for you very soon. So stay tuned.
PM me with any questions
UPDATE:: They will be available to anyone that wants them for 60.00 shipped to anywhere in the US.
He dosent want to start selling them yet until they are tested out on my car but once I get them and install them they will be available to everyone else. I'll keep everyone posted.

For anyone wanting to see pics, if they are like the ones from our thread about Pauls attempt at getting a company interested (Seems as though the guy Paul was talking to backed out) here's mine, in this thread;
http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55214&perpage=5&pagenumber=1
Handling is much crisper under a heavy load. But in normal everyday driving you won't really notice a diff. In other words, if you're pushing it to the extreme in the corners, you'll notice a diff. then.
Anyways, glad to see there's someone out there willing to make the setup for GA owners - Good work, Joe!:)

The install is very simple. all it requires you to do is loosen 4 nuts on the front strut towers put the bar on and put the nuts back on.
The rear install is exactly the same except you only take off 2 nuts on each tower.

Once I get them Installed and send pics to the vendor he will give me a canadian price. So I should therfore probably have a price by friday since I am installing and sending pics tommorow.
Do you thik it would be worthwhile to make a video of the installation or do you think pics will be enough? The instalation is very straight forward but I could do a video if anyone wants.
do both it would be beneficial maybe to some newbies who might want video over text.

the rear bar should not work considering the cavalier/sunfire and the grand ams have completely different setups in the rear
JoeyK
07-01-2006, 12:55 AM
The rear brackets are identical between the two. The only difference is the bar is longer for a Grand Am. As luck would have it the front bar from a Cav. stb works on the rear, in conjunction with the Cav. rear brackets, as I proved in my origional experiment.;)

Those are threaded collars, welded to the strut tower structure. At those points the strut is actually bolted on from underneath. -DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE THEM!!!-
If you look in a couple of my pics I used a few thick body washers (They're gold in the picture) on the other studs to bring them up level with those collars, then used another nut on top of them.

Acutally, depending on thickness, you'll have to put 2 to 3 washers per side so I'd say buy 6 washers to be on the safe side.

You won't notice a diff. unless you're really pushing it hard, for everyday driving, you won't even notice a difference.
My car used to lift the outside rear wheel fairly easy in an extreme, hard turn. Since I installed my bar I noticed it does not lift as easily now.
The front bars make more of a difference, imo. You feel a bit of firmness with the front bar installed & as I said, the rear you most likely won't even know it's there untill you push it hard in a turn.

I've been following and I think I'll join the bandwagon, one question, though. After all that, how easy do you think removal would be if you had to carry the occasional odd-sized object in the trunk and the STB was in the way? Good work on getting this done though, Joe, you have been very good at keeping this thread going and keeping us updated.

If you had to get it out of the way it wouldnt be terribly difficult But you might want to have a few minutes to take it out. The brackets could stay in and you can just remove the bar it's self pretty fast.. But honestly it really dosent take up any space There is about an inch and a half from the back of the bar to the back of the rear seats.

What are the measurments of your rear?
You want the measurement from center to center of the shocks correct?
prototypepacifi
07-04-2006, 12:47 PM
Distance between the inside bolts would probably be more helpful. Measure how far apart the bolts are, too, to see if the same bracket would work.

When one front tire dips (pot hole, or drain or something) the steering doesn't pull like it did before the STB. I'm not really expecting the rear to do all that much, but it looks cool and for $30 isn't bad. :)

Depends on how they rated the package and what category it was put in ... sending it regular mail is generally because the post office only ever charges for any duties and tax when UPS charges for those thing PLUS there own fees for clearing the package :(

Actually Paul, the ovaled ones are solid & the round ones are hollow. The oval shaped ones would be the sturdiest, imo. (I've got the oval in front & the round in the rear, both from Drivingear.)

I heard somewhere that the hollow ones are the sturdiest. I don't remember the reasoning behind it, but whoever told me this said that there was something that made them stronger, less flexible, and less likely to break. Given, I really doubt there's much difference in them (and that they'll likely never break anyways)

Not with aluminum, hollow would allow it to bend easier. But I'm not worried, they are plenty sturdy enough to handle the job, afterall, they are 6061 aircraft grade.:)

Okay guys, I tried reading all 11 pages but I must have missed something. I guess we contact the people at the drivinggear@yahoo.com email address.
How did they fit on cars with the different alternators. I know that in 03 the alt. changed, unfortunatly I can't remember which one mine has (it's an early 03). Is there a clearance issue like with some other STB's?
Also what was the final solution on the rear since the funny bolt won't come off? Is just spacing it up with washers the best solution so far?
I'm hoping to jump on to the sale because at less than half the price of the others, I don't care that they aren't as pretty. I really liked the red one on PFYC but I can't justify paying that much for something I'll most likely never use.
Also what size wrench or other tools will I need? Forgive the questions but I'm always the guy that overprepares for everything. I'm the type of guy who reads the instructions on the box of toothpicks just out of curiosity.

Oh, it'll come off, if you get into your wheel well & back it out. Those are bolts, bolted in from the wheel well. The only solution is to level the bracket with washers before bolting down.

One more thing. Some people have mentioned the closeness of the bar to the alternator. My understanding is that the alternator casing is negative ground like the car chasis, so physical contact won't actually hurt anything electrically. However has anyone rubbercoated theirs just in case? I've seen those cans of rubber paint at Autozone, seems like it might be good if clearance is an issue. It isn't pretty, but it is soft and non-conductive.

there is no need for that unless the positive wire for the alt is anywhere near hitting on the bar........ but I have a feeling if the motor will move enough to cause the alt to hit, you probally dont want to put the STB on.

I have not had any problem with the alternator hitting the bar. even when the engine shakes there is still room. If it makes you feel better rubber coating wouldnt hurt.
If you want to travel to NYC I can test fit the bar on your car.

I got my rear bar installed. I didn't take anything off, I just bought 8 locking washers and 4 nuts and bolted them onto the existing nuts. It's level, and doesn't move at all!
I've also got like 1.5-2 inches between my front bar and the alt, so I don't think you should have any problems with it.

I had my alt. hitting my first bar but the difference in this bar & the other is the heigth at which the eyelet hole is on the bracket. On the other bar's brackets it was lower. This bar has a bit of an upward angle so the eyelet area of the bracket sits higher. As a side note, the eyelet part of the brackets were hitting the bottom of my hood so & took them to the bench grinder & ground the tops of them about a 1/8 of an inch, scuffed them down & repainted them. I also took my buffer to my bars, they look like chrome now.:)

I had a bit of a problem getting the back in, but it wasn't too bad at all. The bracket on the driver's side was sitting at an angle, instead of going straight across to the other one, so I had to kinda force the bar into the bracket. That's the only problem I had with them, and it's a minor problem. The front fit perfectly.

Has anyone else had the hood clearance problem Joey had?
Well I remember the bar from PFYC somehow would contact the altenator is a way to cause a problem. That's why the had to put in the disclaimer. I did a search for the thread here and came up with a billion pages but not what I wanted. I'm glad these fit better.
Anyway, I ponied up the cashola. To those still on the fence the guy agreed to the price today so it's not to late to do it. Like I said before, they may not be as pretty as the other types you see, but for the money I couldn't pass it up and the size of them makes me think they may be stronger.
Besides, looking at the cars here I imagine people will modify the look of them anyway since they modify everything else. Some will have things painted on it, others may have holes drilled in them so the wires loom through them, who knows. ;)

Did everyone who got their tracking numbers also get some payment information and some thing about 8% sales tax?
Also....what courier company is the tracking with. UPS didn't work for me.
b2089

It is UPS. The tracking number doesn't work for 24 hours. I've ran into this alot with UPS. They recycle tracking numbers so it takes a while before the system registers it, usually that occurs only after the package is on the road from it's destination to the closest hub for delivery.
I paid him yesterday and got a tracking number today. That's good service. I like this group buy. It's the first I've been privy to and we should do it more often.

Slowbird is in Canada, so he may not have shipped UPS.
I didn't see anything about an 8% sales tax thing anywhere..I payed $60 and that was it.

Put our front bar on tonight and had clearance issues.
We have a 2004 and the positive wire comes off the top rear of the alternator right where the bar goes across.
It touched the rubber isolater for the positive wire.
I went ahead and bent the bar a little bit to gain some clearance, and installed the bend toward the firewall.
I then put a piece of rubber hose around the bar @ that spot.
Heres a couple pics of the modified bar.

So that must be the change that occured in late 03 to make the cars incompatible with strut braces, they moved that darn wire to the top. I'll have to look at mine and see how it is.

I just looked at mine. On mine the positive in on the back of the alternator low down, but there's an electrical connection where your positive wire is.
Hows the hood clearance? So far Joey is the only one who's hood touched. I must assume that he did something wrong :)

LOL,nope. (Hmmm,.. how do I put it? I guess I'll explain it by saying I'm one of the most picky, anal people you'd probably ever meet in the automotive body & paint profession) I'm the one who figured this all out & I gotta tell you, it's not rocket scientry. I've heard from alot of people with the same problem. You may not even know it's touching untill you see your paint starting to wear away. It's that slight but I'll almost bet the farm someone in this group will have the same probem, might take a few weeks or so to notice the signs but it'll happen.
-Just a pointer for you guys, keep an eye on the area above the bar brackets for wear, also, if your hood seems a little louder when you shut it that can also be a sign. You may also have it pop open with some force behind it when you pull the hood release. If anyone runs into it don't fret, it's an easy fix, as I said.
One big cause of it happening intermittantly, varying from car to car, is the drilling of the brackets during manufacturing. Trust me, these are not a piece of high precission work, they are not all in the same spec. Even the bars themselves are obtained from a generic manufacturer & used by a variety of companies.
I am not putting them down though. Although they are not precission made they get the job done & cheaply at the same time.:)
Another is when your car was put together the hinges may have been shimmed for proper fitment, or they may not, making a varying difference from car to car in hood heigth at the cowl area.
EDIT:As a side note, I think Drivingear should buy a banner ad on the site. If it was not for my forsight & a little r&d they would never know they were sitting on top of a product for Grand Am's that they could come up with so easily with thier own components. So in other words they are profitting off of my ingenuity. I just don't know how to come across as a sincere individual in asking on behalf of GAOC. I mean, I really don't think I should just come out & say "Hey, you should atleast support our GA club because without me, you would not have these bars to sell"
Anyone have a decent approach? I'm open to suggestions.:)

About the banner, I'd just ask a mod for site specs such as unique visitors, total number of members, number of active members, revenue that others ave earned via click through, etc.. Then let him know the price to banner ad and the price to banner on the link page, and see if he bites. Some people are complacent and willing to not grow and others are eager to grow their buisness.

It seems fine. I tried to make sure everything stayed below the rear weatherstrip and when I first closed the hood, I did it very slow and gentle. I did not feel any resistance.
I am going to stick some clay (or gum) on the brackets and close the hood to get a good measurement of the clearance.

By the way, my bending was not the most professional.
I layed it @ an angle and beat it with a dead blow hammer.
I may buy a mini press @ Harbor Freight and bend it again.
(good excuse to buy one huh ?)

I think you would be okay just rubber coating the bar. You can get a spray on coating designed to isolate gas tanks from autozone. That would make a thin protective coating and the boot on the positive would then be an extra layer. You'll have to look and see how it installed though. Remember that these bars have a lot of variance in their design.

Or I'll just wrap the bar in bubble wrap.
prototypepacifi
07-17-2006, 05:09 PM
You could try going to lowes or something and getting some foam pipe wrap. Plumbers use it on hot water lines, I believe, and its about 1/8th-1/4 inch thick, and would probably slip right over the bar. You should check into it. I probably wouldn't look too bad, be too expensive, too hard, or cost too much!
Just an idea, of course. That's what we use on our tool buckets at work and it resists wear and tear like you wouldn't believe.

07-17-2006, 05:12 PM
My thought was that the rubber coat would be a nice black and if you do the entire bar it wouldn't look bad either, but the wrap might work better. Foam wrap, not the bubble wrap. Everyone knows the only good thing about bubble wrap is when you can pop all the bubbles to let off steam.
There's a kevlar wrap at many performance aouto stores that people cut to use on wiring. It's beige and looks like those chinese handcuffs, so I don't think it would look good, but it might work and would be better than bending the bar unless you absolutly have to.

You can put whatever you want on there, it'll eat right through it the 1st time it hits. That's why I have an arched bar. I put on my 1st straight bar, headed out of town on a weekend trip the next morning & then noticed a horrible noise out on the highway when I hammered it. I couldn't figure it out for a while, sounded almost like a loose exhaust shield but really loud. I then determined what it was the next morn (sunday) as it had a good 1/8 inch chunk ground out of the bottom side of the bar. By the time I got home sunday evening it had just about went 1/4 inch into the bar. That's how I knew it was hollow. It ate through.
I now have a solid, arched bar & have no issues. I would not run it if it's going to hit your output connection on your alternator. It'll most likely cost you an alternator. Our 3.4 v6's have a hell of alot of torque. You'd be amazed just how much they rock in thier mounts under heavy acceleration.

I dunno for sure. My connections are not up top. The top of my alt. was hitting the underside of the bar. That's when I decided to swap it out for an arched one. It's been a year or so now. I cannot remeber what part of the alt. was hitting. I'll go out to the garage & see if I can figure it out. It didn't hurt the alt. though. Just put a hurting on the bar.

The top where one of the bolts goes all the way through to hold the alt together there is a hump, or notch, if you will. That's what was hitting the bottom side of my 1st bar (The straight one.)
If you look at the pick, the spot I am speaking of has been circled.

I don't know. When I had participated in the first thread for the rear bars it was about the rear bar only. I had told others about my misfortune on the front bar in other threads previous to my rear bar experiment. When Paul tried to get a group buy after my discovery (The rear brackets w/ a front bar from a Cavalier makes a rear stb for a GA) before it was for a rear bar only. It may all come down to what brackets are coming with these front bars. Some have the mount tabs fairly low, which my first bar had (The straight bar) My arched bar came with brackets that have elevated mount tabs. (The tab the bar itself mounts to)
JoeyK
07-17-2006, 06:13 PM
If you look in the pick, I circled the mount tab. Notice it sits kinda high, kinda elevated a bit. My first bar was not like that.
EDIT; I guess I kinda obstructed the view with my arrow, if you look at my first engine bay pic. on page 49 you'll see what I mean a little better.

07-17-2006, 06:17 PM
The ones ordered from driving gear in the group buy are straight. They are also elevated on the brackets like in Joey's picture.
