I am wondering if it is possible to supercharge/turbo a 2.3 HO. I am a noob and know very little about these cars, so also any suggestions besides the basic free flow exhaust/intake and w41 cams would be very nice. The car is a 1993 four door Grand am GT.

Some people have done both turbo and supercharged setups on the quad 4...

Sorry for my ignorance. This is my first forum. Now I know to do alittle more snooping before I go posting.

A good member to look for in your searches on this is matt95gt. Welcome to the site, and don't worry, I think we have to tell just about every new person that comes in where the search button is:).

Look at Matt95GT's setup.. I think at some point it was posted everything done. I helped install it, I don't really feel like listing out what we had to do :lol:

Possible = yes,
easy = no.
Turbo... you'll be on your own to come up with a manifold and fabricate charge piping. It's a tight fit between the firewall and exhaust side fo engine. Also, you may find some turbo manifolds for the 95 2.3 J-body cars, but the orientation of the steering rack of the N-bodies won't let you use it.
Supercharger... the GM/eaton blower for the 2000+ 2.4 Twin Cam will work, with lots of effort. But be warned... lots of cutting/grinding, and annoyances like having to disassemble the alternator to cut a chunk out. There is also talk of someone making a home-brew mount kit for an Eaton M90... although I don't know when/if it will materialize.
Either route... you'll need to come up with a system to deliver more fuel and be able to adjust tuning. There is a discussion on this topic here:
http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54472
You'll need have an understanding of all those components before attempting a boost project.
Also be aware that the HO is high compression... that will need some other consideration to avoid pre-ignition/knock. Premium fuel will be a must (93-94 octane preferred), need to retard timing under boost (MSD box, or otherwise), and intercooler or alky injection.

Thanks matt, that's exactly the info I needed. This was just an idea cause I know it is really hard to get alot of HP without forced induction on a 4 cyl. I have a friend who is into frankenstiening cars (he just built up a 350 for his 91 camaro that is pushing 500 hp NA with a nasty shot of NOS putting over 650 HP). He is already excited cause he thinks the quads are some of the best 4's out there. So hopefully I will be able to takle this within the next year and if I do I will post pics and progress. Oh, and thanks to this site in three days I know more then I would have dreamed about these engines.

oh wanted to add in here, THERE is a turbo manifold for the N body 2.4. the site is http://www.jgstools.com/turbo/index2.html
they have an assembly kit,you'll have to get it welded,its like 170 OR you can get the pre-built one for over 200 BUT id go with the pre-built because the one for 170 you'll end up spending more to have it welded and leak tested and might end up costing more then the 200+ one.
Im going with a turbo setup and I'll be getting that manifold as well.
Another addition to what Matt said for fuel stuff,you can get the AFPR and the FMU and MSD timing boxes or you can get the HP Tuners software that came out for the 2.4 and don't have to worry about buying extra stuff,might cost more(think it runs like 500 or so for the software) BUt it is so in depth and theres so much you can change and reprogram and all the goodies.

^He has a 2.3 HO... none of that 2.4 application stuff applies. The 2.4 manifold/flange will not fit the 2.3 head (not even close - bolt pattern is staggered) and HPtuners will not work on OBD 1 or anything older than 97.

Thanks for trying vanish. I actually have another question. I know that the HO has the high compression and I am having the engine rebuilt right now with stonger then stock gaskets and seals. Will I have to drop the compression with new pistons in order to supercharge it?

you won't HAVE to but if its being rebuilt then might as well go ahead and change the compression.

How high of boost will I be looking at?

well how much do you want to run at:D ? ID start out at 5psi to stay on the safe side,then just work your way up. I believe Matt(Matt95GT) is running 5psi(looking in is signature).
