My father-in-law tried to cross a flooded roadway last night and drowned his poor Pontiac. I'm the car guy of the family and he said I could have it. Is it worth parting out? Are any parts on it worth anything? If there's nothing worthwhile I'll just tow it right to the crusher. He'd like to know tonight what I'm going to do with it.

It's a light teal 97 Sedan with a 5 speed and the Quad 4, but it won't start since fording a flooded roadway. His mechanic said the motor is shot because of the water. The interior stayed dry and is in nice shape. The car has very few options (I think AC, a lighter and the rear spoiler are the only options -- or maybe they are standard features?)

No power options, no rear defrost. It does have an AM/FM radio, but who wants a radio that can't play CDs or at least tapes?

I looked on ebay and it doesn't look like parts are selling. I saw a mirror for $6 and a headlight for $6. The rest of the parts didn't have bids. It's not worth towing it home for $12. I'm not real familiar with domestics so I don't know what parts off this car are desirable and should be kept from the crusher. (if any)

Any parts worth money I'll pull and sell via the classified section here or on ebay.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Aside from getting lucky selling misc parts to those in need (collision, mechanical repair, etc), usually only the rare options are in demand e.g., sport/leather seats.

I have a dead 94 with a rare engine/transmission/interior... yet even that doesn't attract much attention... hence me sending it to the junkyard as-is at the end of the month.

Thank you for the depressing news. :) Some advice: cut the catalytic converter off of it before you scrap it. Around here at least, recyclers are paying $75+ for used cats for the platinum in them.

Umm, That transmission is valuable enough, I had to pay $750 for one with 98,000 and that took me 2 weeks to find.

The car is on the trailer, parked in front of my house. I'll pull what I can tomorrow and take it to the crusher Saturday.
