View Full Version : Can I add ABS?

I have a 2005 SE that was a fleet car. It has no ABS. Is there any way I can add it? I know it would involve a different master cylinder, a controller, and wire harness to the front and back brakes. Would the harness that plugs into the ECM already exist and be tucked away somewhere? Would I need a new EPROM? It's just an idea I'm kicking around. If it's not feasible, I won't consider it.

Same question for traction control.

... you're going to also need an abs sensor at each wheel, which IIRC is in the wheel hub. So I'd think you'll need new wheel hubs as well. I don't know how much a hub is for your car, but for my 98, they are about 90 per wheel.

They should be there already. There are harness plugs on the hubs.

oh ok, i didnt think theyd bother putting the sensors there if the car wasnt equipped for them, but I'm not the best to ask about that one, lol.

Just curious - WHY? The ABS system used on GAs is sh!t- I'm trying to remove it from my car before the safety runs out.

The few times ABS might have helped, the system used on both my older one (a '98) and my current one (an '01) damn near caused an accident instead of helping to prevent one.

It's not worth the expense, either - since your car didn't come equipped, you need the master cylinder with the ABS motors, Vehicle Speed Sensors at all 4 corners, which means the ABS hub assemblies, as well as a new PCM that has the programming to control the ABS, and they're not cheap. The traction control is tied into the braking system as well, so in order to have it, you need the ABS. You'd also have to check both fuse panels to make sure that the appropriate fuse and relay slots are actually wired up and good to go (they probably are, as one would think it would be cheaper to have the panels wired and just need the fuse and relay).

Given the amount of money and time you'd spend getting everything, and then installing it, for a subpar setup, you'd be throwing good money after bad.

It's saved my ass a couple times in my old GA. Traction control is no big deal. After driving for years without ABS and having had a couple wrecks in years past due to ABS not existing yet, I thought it might be a good idea to see if I could retrofit it.

I'd probably see if I could get as many used parts as possible. The hubs are already there.
