Remote Starter w/ dead remote

I have a 2001 GAGT and when i bought it (used) it had a remote starter (not sure what kind). About a year later the remote for it died. Do I have to get a new remote from the same people who made the remote starter, or will any generic remote work?...and can I program it like any other remote or do i have to do something special?

there is really no such thing as a universal remote that'll work on remote starters/ alarms/ or keyless systems. Peek your head up under the dash (or the center console area in your 01) and see if you could find the brain of the unit and then determine the brand and model it is. :)
