View Full Version : I am OFFICIALLY STUMPED..pls help
I have just purchased a new deck and a new set of 6x9's, and I want to install the speakers myself.. normally this should be a SIMPLE job on most vehichles, but not on my 1996 GASE 4 DR. (replacing factory speakers)
I have searched the forums extensively (as well as the whole freakin net), and I cannot figure out how to remove the rear seat.
1. I tried to determine if I have a fold down seat, which I do not think I have- In the trunk, there are 3 metal hooks that are on the right, center, and left sides. There are NO straps in the trunk.
2. I have read that to remove the backseat the old fashioned way, there are two bolts on the FLOOR, by the seat bench. There are NONE. The only bolts I have found are the ones that are holding the seat belt hooks on. Would those be the ones? am I just a moron?
3. Is there a way to remove the back grill (covering the speakers) without removing the seats?
I also had a crazy idea about just cutting two holes in the grill right over top of the speakers to access them that way. would that be worth my time?
This is driving me F**ING insane. Please help.
Thanks.

lemme try to help you. there are 2 bolt holding the bottom seat maybe about 8 inch from the edge. stick ur finger under the seat and u will feel it. i think they are 1/2" then u will have the 2 t50 screws holding ur top portion and seatbelts. now on my car i dont have a grill covering my speakers just the stock carpet thing. Slide the carpet thing out and ur speakers are right there. BAM!
hope that helps

Got to take some time and slow down. There are two bolts that hold the rear seat in. You may even have to run your hand along the edge to feel it. Its usually hiden.. the lip of the carpet normally hides it. After the bottom half comes off there are two more bolts holding the top half on.. These bolts also have your seat belts too.. you have to remove them.. then "Those three hooks you looked " that actually is the seat sitting in the body it self you need to lift the seat out.. two people generally help here.. and then the trim needs to be removed then the packing shelf can come out..

"1992 Grand AM SE 6x9 Speaker removal
Well here it goes, I started this job at 3:30 PM and ended it at 8:30 PM, nothing less then a horror story lol.
If you pop your trunk and look up at the back deck you can see the bottoms of the 6x9's poking through, congratulations, you've found them but if you'll notice the screws are pointing down from the top and the hole is to small to get the speakers through if you cut the screws. You have now entered the world of GM and no there is no turning back.
In order to get the rear 6x9 speakers out of this car you will need a size 50 Torx socket, a size 8 socket, a size 13 socket and a philips head screwdriver.
Start by removing the back seat base, where the seat buckles come through. 2 screws, size 13. Look for a small indentation in the carpeting near the base of the seat where it starts to run into the floorboard, push down on this indentation and you should see the screws. Once this is off put it to the side somewhere, pick up the loose change you find under the seat. I made about 5 bucks but your results may vary. Next you have to remove the rear plastic trim panels, the molded plastic where the cupholders are. This is relatively easy, look for a small hole in the panle itself, use the phillips head screwdriver and remove the screw. Then gently take off the panel, making sure to note where it underlaps on the panel that runs to the front of the car, repeat this procedure for the other side. Put these panels with the seat part. Next is to undo the backrest part of the seat. This you will need the size 50 Torx socket. Follow the seatbels to where they anchor into the metal frame of the car, the 2 giant screws with the star in the center are the ones you need to take off. Whatever you do be sure NOT to strip them.
Once the torx bolts are off push up on the back of the seat rest, there are 3 small hooks on the back seat that disengage. Remove this and place in your growing parts pile. Now what you need to do is grab onto the back deck, the carpeted piece that overs your 6x9 speakers. There are two plastic retaining bolts that you must undeo. Grab the panel close to the bolt and give a gentle tug until it disengages, do the same for the other side and remove the panel. Congratulations, you have uncovered the 6x9 speakers.
Install the new ones and reverse the steps to put the car back together"
Saved it and glad i did.
Right on..
thanks to all.
I am going to attempt this today.. i'll let you know how it goes.
