I bought a new fuel filter and let my friend install it. He's a mechanic. It seems to be workin good. The only bad thing that I noticed, is that when I looked in the fuel filter package (the new one), I saw a little plastic clip and a little rubber washer ring. He didn't install them. What are they for? Did he mess up? Did he use the ones that were already there? I'd ask him, but he's out of town.

Depending on your car's fitting, these things might not be needed.

There's two sides to a typical GM fuel filter. The quick connect and the threaded side...

The O-ring is usually use on the threaded fitting side but re-using the old one has never caused me any leaks (and the filter I've changed twice now), so you're okay there.

As for the clip, that's used for some quick connect fitting sides, but is not necessary/useable on other cars... On your car the clip was probably not necessary (it isn't on my GA, I had to discard the clip you're talking about for the filter to even fit). If there's no leaks he more than likely did it right, so you can relax ;)

Thanx a lot bro. But hey would I know if I had a gas leak? I mean I have low mpgs, but I smell no gas and I don't see any residue. Whenever I travel about 20 miles, my fuel indicator needle moves about 3 lines down. Is that normal? Ever since I reached 100,000 miles on it, I've been paranoid about my GA.

Well you can visually inspect for leaks but smell is the number one giveaway with a gas leak. If you have a gas leak, even small, you will smell the gas around your car. If the tank is fulll and it's in your driveway and you can run the car, shut it off and never notice any gas smell there probably isn't a leak. Have some other people walk around your car too, see if they smell anything. If not, you probably don't have any leaks :)

Thanx! I feel way better now. I thought I had to re-do the whole filter installation.

1. WHAT is your exact fuel consumption?
You've been complaining for about 2 weeks, and we keep asking; but you won't give us actual data to respond to :banghead:

2. When setting in the driveway, turn on the ignition but don't start the engine.
Leave it in 'P'.
Stick your face down below the right rear passenger door, and look toward the rear.
That's where the FF is, and since the fuel pump os 'on' and pressurizing the lines, any leak *should* be dripping at this time and location. Might be only a drop or two each minute, but should be noticable if the light is proper, and *might* be smellable if there's no breeze.
So NOT use a match or other flame to help see/sniff.

3. Since the FF has already been removed, the connections are clean and re-doing the job would only take 10 minutes max.
But you need the specal little 'quick-connect' wrench to remove the non-threaded fitting.

I would check for a visible/smellable leak, and if I noticed nothing, I would wait and ask friend when he returns.

Good luck,
-Rick
