Greetings all! I have a 4 cylinder '99 Grand Am. About 3 weeks ago, my "Low Coolant" light came on for the 1st time ever. Filled it up and was good to go for about a week and a half until it came on again. I got in my car last Friday and during my drive to work, "Low Coolant" light was still on. During my 20 minute drive, the temp gage maxed out. I was told to turn the heater on full blast, so I got all the way to work and on the way home that day, stopped to fill up the coolant tank, which was bone-dry. After filling it, I drove home. The temp gage stayed way up, low coolant light did NOT shut off (even after I filled the tank full) and I sweated my butt off with the heater on. Drove 20 miles, got home and even though i had JUST filled it 20 minutes ago, the Coolant tank was completely empty. What the HELL is going on with this thing???

sounds like a blown head gasket.... Id seriously NOT drive it, or even start it until it can be towed to a garage and diagnosed correctly.

The only other possibility that I see, is that theres a hole inthe coolant tank, but youd see it leaking out under the car if that were the case. And even if it were the case, with that engine overheating and still being driven as much as it was, you still most likely screwed the headgasket anyways. Good luck to you either way, but I'm pretty sure it wont be pretty.

first u didnt mention if there was leaking coolant on to the floor. second you may want to check your carpet to see if its wet that would indicate a bad heater core which would cause over heater and lose of coolant.

if theres none on the floor or in the car the only other place for it to go is into your engine

Your original problem could well have been a hose or your water pump. But I would bet you made things a lot worse driving it. Quads & TwinCams don't like to be run hot.
