This is something you will probably get alot of different answers on. But start out by going to www.tirerack.com and reading reviews on some of the performance tires to get ideas.

So you're looking for a summer tire that gets great wet and dry traction, yet lasts a long time.. what's your definition of a long time?

Generally, grip is inversely proportional to tire life. A softer tire grips better, but wears faster.

What's your budget? A really good blend of wet and dry performance, and decently long life if you treat them nicely, is the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3. They are midrange pricey, but they are very good all-around summer tires. Autox'ers don't really like them as their sidewalls aren't the stiffest, which results in slightly smooshy turn in, but for higher speed stuff, they work great, and they are very liveable, too. Just make sure you get the right width for your wheels.

Bridgestone Potenza S-O3's are also a good choice, but they are expensive, IIRC.

I agree with Foxy, I like the Goodyear F1. Had them before my current tires. Now i ride the Toyo Proxes T1-S and i just love them.

I just bought the Yokohama Avid VRs. I have had them for a few weeks now and I love them. Although, I would probably be happy with anything because i just got rid of my old RSA's.

I can't find the Avid VR on the Yokohama webpage (http://www.yokohamatire.com/uhphp_searchresults.asp). What kind of tire is it?
