leather seats

ok so i was hoping some one could help me figure out how to get leather seats for my GA. right now i have the crapy cloth seats and they are all stained and just look like crap. i used to think leather was not really all that much better then cloth but thats cuz the leather in my dads yukon is ugly. i saw a GT with leather seats and decided i wanted some. so im assuming that its just basicly a cover for the seat. take off the cloth and put on the leather. but im not sure. these are the things i would like to no.

how expensive is it

do i have to buy the entire seat or just the leather covering

where can i get the stuff i need, other then the dealership

please share ur thots id like to no what other people think. thanks for all the help

I'm no specialist in the matter, but I do believe that it's an entire seat, although I've seen leather seat covers in stores before for like $40-50 CDN. If all else fails just go to a wreckers and see if there's any leather seats kicking around.

it'll be 100x easier to replace the whole seat.... i just picked up a set off ebay for $275.

Hi I am planning to do the same, so far I have contacted all the auto wrecking places close and left my name to call if they get any.
I am also going to meet with a leather upholsterer to see what the cost is to convert mine. I will post his answear when I find out.
I would prefer to get originals as the newer leather seats are 6 way adjustable where is mine is only 4 way.

Hi Jeff,

Well here is what i found out so far, from an auto wrecker when they have them which seems quite rare they sell them for approx. 600.00 complete.

To recover mine complete the price ranged from 900.00 to 1000.00, it takes just short of 7 yards of leather to do all seats front and back.

Cost of leather alone is 350.00

The fellow who quoted me 1000.00 work as not as nice as the fellow who quoted 900.00 so I would really request to see some of thier recent work.
I haven't heard back from the dealership who is working me out a quote on new seats but I'm sure it will be quite a bit more.

Well I have done much more extensive research on this and 900.00 to 1000.00 gets you a poor job not worth doing.
I went to a highly recommended shop toay and their work is nothing short of excellent.
The price all done is 1850.00 CDN.
Its a lot more but better to spend 1850.00 for excellence than to waste 1000.00 on horrible.

Don't like leather seats that much. My buddy has leather seats in his 99 Alero (Grand Am's sibling car) and he complains because the seats started to crack. I am pretty sure GM uses crappy leather seats for $20k cars.

I have a '99 GT w/ leather and it's still in prime condition! No rips or tears, barely looks worn! (they're tan in colour)
If you can find the seats in a scrap yard, I'd say go for that VS having your cloth ones covered as you'd have to worry more about the seams etc pulling too much.

Thanks folks and I agree with you 100% about finding them at an auto wrecker.
Problem is I have e-mailed and phoned so many my head hurts and I keep getting told the same thing.

" If we had them you could get the complete set for about 600.00 but we have never seen leather seats for your car"

I would love to get them from another car as well as the fact that the 2001SE drivers seat is a 4 way adjustable and the leather seats are 6 way adjustable.

hi i would recomend goin to ebay for seat covers for your grand am its alot cheaper you would just put the leather seat cover over the factory one but its up to you whether u wanna go with a new seat or seatcovers.
