Oh hot damn, you have two cars I would love to have! Nice choice, how do you like it?
Well, I've only driven it like 5 miles.. my wife has been racking up the rest of the miles on it. We picked it up with 10 miles on the odo and now we're at a hundredsomething.
From the passenger seat, I must say that it's much more comfortable than the STi. It's quieter, doesn't rattle like the STi (damn stiff springs), and isolates you from the road better. The sound system is nice, the seats are much softer, and it has tons of legroom.
From the five miles I drove it, the shifter needs a lot of work. Maybe a short-throw kit or something. The throws are long, and there have been quite a few times that I thought I was in gear, but wasn't. The STi's shifter sort of 'clicks' into place, the throws are very positive. The GTO's, not so much. The physical effort is much lighter on the GTO's, though. Same with the clutch. I can feel what the STi's clutch is doing through the pedal much easier than in the GTO. It's like everything int he GTO has a layer of insulation between the machinery and you. This is great on a drive, but not so great when you're doing aggressive driving.
The engine sounds wonderful, and the torque is pretty amazing. We've been babying the engine since it's new and we want to break it in right, but it's crazy watching it loaf up a hill at 1500 rpms that my STi has to be at about 3000 rpm's at. If my tach goes under 2k rpms in the STi, I have to think about downshifting. In the GTO, that limit is about 1k rpms.
The trunk is tiny in the Goat, but as long as we can fit a duffle bag in it, we'll take it for a road trip. For an autox or track day, I'll take my STi. They're definately geared for different audiences, but they both, so far, excel in what they're aimed at.

and to think, everyone was bitching about the 04's not having hood scoups. ironic isn't it?
The hood scoops are fake.. but the hole does go through the hood; it's just a rubber or plastic backing plate that closes off the hole. I'm thinking that someone, somewhere, has to have figured out how to utilize them to get air straight into the engine. In the above picture, you can see how the hood scoops are a bit forward of where air enters the engine..
The GTO has a really nifty little computer integrated into the car.. you can use it to set all sorts of options like whether or not you want the horn to honk when you use the keyless entry, if you want the radio to beep at you in acknowledgement of doing things, an overspeed indicator (set it to 5 over the speed limit, and it'll bing when you're going too fast), and all sorts of other little things. Nothing earth-shattering, but it's really nice to be able to personalize the car to you like that.

God damn it I love that car. Someday Ill have one in black with bl;ack/red leather. So goddamned hot. Im glad you like it :D
On a slightly related note... ALL PONTIAC CARS SHOULD HAVE THE RAM AIR HOOD FFS! In my mind, its what makes a pontiac a pontiac, as much as the dual nostril grilles, (usually) the big round foglamps, and the elegant arrowhead. Functional or not, I love it all the same.

yep, good looking car. i haven't even went back to look at any at the dealer..........haven't had time.
engine's already broke in.........give it hell :D seriously, i've had many competent engine builders say that a few miles and the engine is broke in good enough. now on the car the brakes are still breaking in, so try to avoid major stops. but everything else should be good to go as far as driving it like you stole it a little.

Oh, very cool that you picked up the GTO!
As for the shifter, I had the same problem with mine, it just seemed to me too long. Got a B & M short throw which reduced damned near half. Now instead of being clunky I can shift with my index finger. Well worth your money, a short shifter.
Kinda thought you would lean towards a Legacy, but it seems your dealership experince has soured you.
I know the low lugging V8 is a bit odd to you after driving the STi, but try this: at a stoplight, leave from it in 5th gear. Isnt torque cool? Of course your EJ25 has it too (in spades!) but GM has seemed to perfect the "flat as Nebraska" torque curve. :)
Good driving!
My wife basically said, "No more Subarus." She thought it would be wierd to have two of them in the garage. Since it was going to be her car, I wasn't going to argue.. But the fact that the only Subaru dealer in about 60 miles sucks monkey nuts surely didn't help any (we never did test drive one :-/ I've driven a 2.5GT before, but it had the 4EAT transmission and I didn't really think it was matched too well)
Matts,
I know some people say that you can beat on the engine ASAP to help break it in and such, but.. we'll be cautious. In any case, it ought to be over the 500 miles by this weekend (that's what the manual specifies). The brakes, oddly enough, I will beat on ;)
