View Full Version : Noise coming from front left wheel

I have an 01 GrandAm 3.4L with app 135,000 miles on it.

I'm hearing a sort-of humming noise coming from my drivers side front wheel area. The pitch of the noise changes consistantly with the speed that I'm going, so I know it's not a tranny issue and I'm pretty sure it's a wheel bearing, but wanted some feed back as that would mean the whole hub assembly would need to be replaced.... again....

I had GoodYear take a look at it when I had my tires balanced and rotated and they claimed the noise I was hearing was simply tire noise. Well, I hate to tell them, but it's more than that. When I turn slightly left at 55-65 mph, the noise gets louder. When I turn slightly right, it quiets down. Now I know tire noise could do this, I know my car after driving it for over 135,000 miles and this is more than tire noise and it's getting louder.

The other day, my ABS light kicked on, kinda confirming my suspision and now the car is starting to pull to the left a bit. So, am I correct in thinking that I will need to replace my hub assembly?

I think I'm going to attempt it myself this time as I don't have the mechanical breakdown insurance I used to have (with that it only cost me the $250 deductable instead of the whopping $750 total that the dealership charged). I've had the hub assembly on the passenger side replaced twice and drivers side once. The original set went just after the warrenty expired due to the milage and about 6 months apart from each other :-( Then the passenger one went again about 30,000 miles after it was replaced.

Any suggestions on a good brand for replacement? Autozone lists valueCraft and Timkin. Advanced Auto lists BCA, Dynapak and SKF. Also, on Advanced Auto's site (partsamerica.com) they state 2 required per vehicle for the SKF. Does this mean that if I replace one, both should be replaced? Any harm in not replacing both except that the other may go a few months or year down the road?

Thanks,
Mike

Ive no idea on a good brand for replacement, but Id do something with a good warranty either way. I do agree that it sounds like a bearing issue.
I think that the bca ones they mean that youre required to buy both, they wont sell just one.

Are these pretty easy to replace? Anything I should make note of before beginning?

Anyone have a recommendation on a hub assembly I should get for this (I'm not looking for anything fancy, just something to get me another 60,000 out of this car.)

Thanks...
