Well, I bought a 96 GA with a 3100 in it, 158k miles, engine blew 3 days after (rod bearing), got a swap for 450$ and a 3100 for 500$ w/ 62k miles on it. If you want to seriously drive this car, gets some plugs, wires, just tune it up, if the engine wont survive then get a swap.

my 94 grand am 3.1 has around 276 200 km's on it and it runs fine and still get around 550km on a tank of gas. if you maintain it well, it will treat you well. its as if i just bought it new lol. maybe its the cold canadian weather that helps it out, or just the long drives i take it. some times ill turn the radio off and just put it through a test and see if theres anychanges. she/he WILL talk to you :lol: one day i was driving and wanted to accelerate and then the car started to struggle and i would feel the stick shake and thought for sure it was my bloody transmisson. but with a carefull ear and a keen eye i found it to be that my engine mount bolt came loose. well enjoy the grand am. i always say treat the car the same way you want to be treated :roll2: but watch out it may kick yah in the ass.

it took a few grand, but it runs like a dream now, and is in awesome shape, so i'm sure you will get a few problems with it, but nothing too bad

3400 = almost "drop it in" easy
3800 = Multi-thousand dollar project... wiring/trans/mounts, etc

SFI?? wtf. the 3100 is Sequential Fuel Injected. so is the 3400. i don't think you know what you're talking about, 95GT.

my 3100 has over 320,000 km and still runs strong.. i've done alot of work on it, but nothing that has cost more than a rebuild or a motor swap. granted, at this point a new engine is probably my next step.. but i'm a good 3 years of driving beyond the point your car is at.

i'd just drive it and fix anything that costs less than about $300 that happens to the motor. figure a swap can be done for about $500-$700, so wait until repairs start to get close to that amount and THEN get yourself a shiny new one. why yank out the motor while there's still some use to get out of it?

add "clean EGR passage" to your list of things to do. also check the state of the belt and all the hoses, especially at the heater core. look under the thermostat for signs of a leaking lower intake manifold gasket.. if that hasn't been replaced on this car, it will probably need it soon. it's a $200 repair at a shop but you could do it yourself for less than $50..
