Hey guys,.. n gals if there are any.
I've known you guys were here for a long time when I saw a turbo ga at the local pick n pull,.. I had never seen one before. I ended up taking the whole turbo manifold and etc.
I was so wierded out about a 2.0 turbo ga I did a search and found you guys here. I even threw your site to a couple buddies who own ga's
but anyways.
I'm a j-body guy with my own site ( www.jspeed.ca )
but the real reason I'm here is because of the turbo section I spotted.
I see someone there researching the dohc swap and I wanna keep tabs on that.
recent car history:
I have the only 2nd gen cavalier with an asuna sunfire/isuzu impulse front conversion and lately my engine crapped out.
With the rising costs of fuel I've been looking at other swaps (instead of the 3400, 3800sc, HO quad 4).
I had a POS beater car - 91 auto sunbird, 2.0 tbi.
got a sweet ass deal on a donor car for a test swap project - 89 5sp turbo bird - anything i need except the rear axle - $75
I didn't want to test on my cav cause I've spent too much time on the car to have something, anything go wrong where i'd have to disassemble the front to do.
So the dubbed "dirty bird" got a heart transplant, 5sp swap, ecm and dash harness swapped (kept the 91 dash,.. the 89 is fugly), swapped rear body harness - all in 48 hours
Since the swap - 2 weeks now,.. I've had to replace the water pump - motor hasn't been run in 2 years so I expected that. turbo ceized so I got a temp replacement from a buddy - rebuilt a while ago but has blow-through :(
The thing goes like snot and walks all over a 2nd gen z24.
seriously,.. anywhere from 3-5 lengths after 2nd gear pending on my launch.
I dunno what the previous owners of the donor car did to the motor, or if the turbo (the replacement) is somekind of hybrid, but when I first put it on (just about at sea level),.. I blew all the vac lines off the intake manifold,.. once I fixed that, I hit boost cut.
I was on vacation at the time and all i had for resources for a temp fix was a local hardwarestore the size of my livingroom.
put on a ball valve to bleed off boost from the manifold, with a ghetto electrical tape flap that closes the end (makeshift check-valve) during vac at idle.
Now back home in calgary (3500ft above sealevel), I've been able to close off the ball valve entirely. the stock boost guage goes a little bit over 100% but I don't hit boost cut.
Whats up with the gm boost guage that reads only -100 to +100 boost? no psi figures?
hopefully going to the track friday the 25th to go head on with a local guy who did a 3400 swap in his cavi.
But anyways,.. sorry for the long read
I'm gonna keep tabs on the turbo 2.0 section.
This is definitely the swap I'm going to do in my cavi and am excited about the potential for a 16v dohc hybrid possibility.
I'm enthralled about the gas mileage on these 2.0's, especially when kept out of boost!
