View Full Version : Power window disaster
The driver side window quit working last night,stuck in the down position and making all kinds of evil noises.I dug into it this morning to find out what was going on and you would not believe the carnage .Somehow one of the cables got wrapped up between the motor and regulator,The motor looks to be ok but the cable broke a lot of plastic pieces, 4-5 chunks of plastic bracketry laying in the bottom of the door and a large metal and plastic bracket that I have no idea where it is supposed to go.
Is there a good diagram available somewhere that will show me where all the hardware is supposed to go?I guess I could take off the other door panel but I was trying to avoid that if I could.
I was thinking of getting a door from the salvage yard with all the guts intact and swapping everything over.Sure looks to be a lot of stuff broken,dealer only items if you know what I mean.
Suggestions and advice would be very appreciated.
Thanks
James.

Not dealer-only.
Basically, three parts:
* Motor.
* Regulator (to which the motor attaches).
* Clips.
Prices vary, but mebbe $100 for all three.
This stuff breaks so often that there are many aftermarket products.
I don't know if any of the GAOC sponsors specialize in or even sell the window regulators and clips; try there first.
Otherwise, there are a dozen e-sites that do.
Bo to e-bay anad search for power window regulators; whomever shows up will also sell assemblies for your GA, just click on their site.
Get a Haynes manual, you'll need it. About $20.
It will have adequate diagrams of what's happening.
Go ahead and remove the inner panel (careful not to break the mounting clips around the edges), it's the only way you'll fix this problem.
Don't even THINK about a replacement door from a yard; you can't believe the problems involved with swapping doors!!
If nothing else, it requires impact tools to loosen and tighten door hinges from the bodywork, and lining-up hinges/body seams/latch is a royal PITA.
And the window assembly in the donor would prolly gonna fail soon, anyhow.
Do a search on this forum for 'power windows', most of us have had these troubles and there's a weath of information here.
Good luck,
-Rick
PS:
You MUST buy parts for your model and year of GA, and for the proper door.
These things change depending on whether it's a 2-dr or 4-dr, and depending on model year, and depending on which door of the car is involved.
Thanks rixGAphx. You have been a big help.I will try to get back here and post some results when I find something out.

James you are not alone!! Been there; it took about 2 hours to change the entire thing; had to drill the rivets out of the old one (and put bolts in their place)...
bought mine on teh web.
Now I have to do it again for my Buick!
