Polish & Wax

Because I don't always have lots of time, I apply polish to my car in pieces. I.e. fenders, then doors, etc. There is already wax on the car, but with the arrival of spring I started to polish my car. When I'm done I will wax. Question is, how long can I go before waxing? With rain and time against me I still have the whole top part of the car to be polished. I had planned on waxing when I was done - it's just taking longer than I thought. Is it okay the way I'm doing it? It's easier for me to keep track of what I'm doing. I use Meguiars, so I figure there is plenty of protection in the polish as well. What do most of you folks do? Just got done waxing my car tonight. Washed it before it started raining then I moved it into the garage. Hit it up with some Tire Foam. Dirt melting off, while that was going I started on the very top waxed gave it a few them dry toweled it off. Did the hood gave it a few. Dry toweled it. then the trunk, the back of the car (fender) then the passenger, front drivers. then on the top hood and back once more. it shines great but black is so hard to keep clean.
