Hey yall,
I was looking to put a new exhaust on my 1997 V6 Grand am GT. I was wondering what system would sound the best. I did a couple of searches and was finding that the flow masters sound better than the master flows on this type but could anyone be a lil more specific about the flowmasters?
Thanks

straight pipe back and get 2 small like (14's) of flowmasters or magnaflow or just pipes and tips whatever u can afford is the best choice in my opinion

I don't know how much different the V6's sound vs the 2.4's, but I've got a 2.4 same year as yours, and I don't recommend flowmaster. They sounded abosolutely great on my car at an idle or at very low acceleration, but if it was under moderate to high acceleration, it sounded like shit at certain RPM levels.
I personally would recommend Dynomax, Borla, or if you're tight on cash, hit up summit racing, and buy one of their turbo mufflers. Doesn't have the deep tone of the flowmaster, but it doesn't have the shitty rattle sound under hard acceleration either.

Thanks for the help. What would be the cheaper way to go? Buy a exhaust online and then have a shop put it in or just go through a shop. My local shop is about 435 or so for flowmasters. If shopping online is better can anyone list me some model # so i can take a look around? Thanks

$435 is high. I paid $120 shipped from flowmaster for their Super 40 series muffler. I had that muffler and new piping from the exhaust manifold to the muffler installed for $235.

Almost anything sounds good on the 3x00 V6's. I've heard many good ones... Flowmaster, Magnaflow, Borla. I'd recommend one of those.

Hey Xeiros,
What super 40 series did you go with. I honestly have little to no knowledge in this area so thanks for the help. There are like 10 different super 40 series from 3" o/o to 3" o/c.
Also, these mufflers from flowmasters do not come with the exhaust right? I was looking to keep the dual exhaust but get chrome, is that something different from the muffler? Like i said i have no idea about this stuff.

This is the exact muffler I purchased from flowmaster. (http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/products/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3429)
You can still keep your dual exhaust, but you're going to have to buy two mufflers (someone please correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm not sure if he could run duel exit with 1 muffler). As far as the crome thing goes, I'm assuming you're talking about tips. If so, yes you'll still be able to do that. You just have to buy those seperately, as flowmasters don't come with tips. You can buy tips from flowmaster, or borla, or magnaflow. You can also buy from places like Autozone and AdvanceAutoParts. Hell, I got a cheap chrome looking bolt on tip from Walmart that looks just fine. Price varies greatly on them though. It's all what suits your tastes. You'll also have to choose between weld on and bolt on tips.
I'm going to assume that you're not changing your stock exhaust pipe size either, which is fine, which is why I would recommend that you get a 2.25" muffler, and that it be O/C (stands for Offset/Center). That way the size difference isn't too different for the coupler they are going to have to make to make your exhaust fit the muffler.
I'm pretty new to this stuff myself, so if I were you, I'd wait till someone could rebut the info I just gave you. They may have something else to add. I know Matt and urweak are pretty good with this.

Thanks for all the help,
So far i think i am going to go with two of the super fourty series 2.25" O/C mufflers. Can anyone confirm what xieros has said? These will weld right in place of the stock mufflers to that they dont have to do much labor right?
Thanks
