View Full Version : What good are '5 mph rated' bumpers when... (rear-ended)

...the first thing that comes into contact with it is a front license tag and its protruding bolts?

Cliff notes... was at a dead stop waiting at a light. Traffic behind me was stopped too. *bam* A feeble old lady's foot "slipped" off the brake and onto the gas... giving me a pretty good (and unexpected) jolt. She even said "Sorry, I was just at the doctor, and was feeling a bit woozy."
If I had any doubt about my position in the "should senior citizens be retested for license?" debate, my mind is certainly made up now.
For the record... this is the third time a rear fascia on one of my vechicles received a front plate bolt mark by no fault of my own... although this is the first one to actually punch through.

Wow; that blows. Halfway interesting to see the perfect bolt head shaped hole in the fascia, though, but I'm sure it's not even remotely interesting to you...

^Haha... actually I did notice that once I got a good look at it. The other indentations above it were from the raised lettering on a plastic frame... I bet if she hit me hard enough, you could read which dealer that car came from. (BYO mirror if needed)

jesus dude, that blows... Front marker plates are bad news anyways, makes your car look ugly, and turns it into a damned hole-puncher in the event of a slow speed collision :/ poor SE-R!

That sucks and I feel your pain.
On my way to work I too was sitting at a traffic light when the woman behind me was playing with her dog in her lap and she took her foot off the brake.
Lucky for me her Mercury just scuffed the bumper on my TA and lucky for her I was planning on painting it anyhow. I just gave her some choice words and continued my journey to work.

Luckily it wasnt the GA, the bumper would have probably cracked in that case.
And this is why everyone should learn how to drive a manual... keeps you focused on the road ahead, whether you are moving or not :/

I tend to agree. I watched a guy, with the brake applied (though obviously not fully) creep into a lady in front of him at like .5 mph one day at a train crossing a couple months ago. It was hilarious, especially when he had to get back in the car and sit for another 5 minutes in traffic with everybody laughing at him.

:roll2: Ugh... yea, I'm not sure why paying attention is that difficult. I've seen women playing with little wimp dogs in cars too.
Heh "choice words." I was hoping to get out and find a light scuff to match the other one it already got earlier in the year in the train station lot. I was initially quite pissed knowing that it caused just enough damage to have to deal with insurance and all that BS. I brewed a list of choice words too, but luckily it hit me that cursing at some old lady won't really help the situation.

It has happened to the 95 GT and it held up well... there's a hexagon indentation from another front plate in that incident... really hard to notice. Since the 18 wheeler that pushed another car into me drove off, I let that one go.
I agree to an extent... but I've seen manual mishaps too. In fact, back in the spring at the exact same intersection/light, the guy in front of my just starts randomly rolling backwards. A applied the horn and yelling to no avail... lucky for me there was a long enough buffer between our cars and there was nobody behind me... quickly reversed 15-20 feet back. For some reason I got the odd look when we started moving forward again... but I'm not the one who rolled back a complete car length without noticing.

Ok, yea, some people are too stupid to drive manual cars, too... I had almost forgotten the ricer that almost rolled back into me in his honduh.
I mean, when the intersection is on a grade, how can someone NOT realize they are slowly rolling backward? Argh dude, theres not hope for some drivers out there :/ USA needs more strict driver's licenses testing and restrictions and what not
