Hi all.

I'm thinking of getting a GA and have ruled out the V6 because of reliabilty concerns. I am now considering a GA with the 2.2 Ecotec engine. My question is how reliable is this motor? Is it more reliable than the V6? From what I've seen and read so far, it seems to be. What kind of problems have you guys had with this engine??

Thanks for your help.

The ecotec is a lot different than any of gm's other engines. The Ecotec hasnt been in the Grand Am for long but it has been in the Saturn LS and LS1 since 99.(new names now but thats what it was called back then)

As far as the engine goes there have been no major reports of problems with the engine. The only concerns owners have had was bellow average gas mileage which usually occured during the winter. My dad uses a 02 L200 Saturn with the Ecotec for work. Its got 107,000 miles with no engine problems. Since the Ecotec has now replaced most of GM's 4 cyl engine you know its a winner. Its built using such high quality methods that even in its stock form in can stand being pushed up to 250HP

Just to let you all know, GM traded diesel technology with Honda for a lot of their I4 technology. That is why it was first introducted into the Saturn, and now is making it's way into the mainstream GM's. So the reliability is there (one of the only things a stock Honda engine has going for it:P ) Anyway, just thought I'd share

that is so much Bullshit its not funny. Honda doesnt make any Diesel engines nor does it have any plans for one.

The Ecotec Was designed by a team of internaitonal GM Engineers . from every GM brand. Opel had major part in it.it has actualy been in use i europe for much longer, the opel Astra and Vectra both use it. the Opel speedster uses it. Saab is also useing it,some of them make 230-250HP. in the Saab 9-3 and 9-5.

who ever told you that line of BS is a freaking retard. if GM ever did anything like that ,it would be with Toyota since GM owns 20% of it.

Well USMCspy you almost got it right GM did trade disel Isuzu engines with Honda but not for 4 cylinder technology. They traded disel engines for the new 3.5L Vtec v6 engine thats in the new accord and a few other of their vehicles. GM has decided to put the 240hp Vtec engines in the 2004 Saturn VUE replacing the 3.0L Opel dirived 182hp Engine. They will not be offering the Honda Engines in any other GM vehicles.

The Ecotec engine is not based on anything from Honda. As Fast_Am said the Ecotec is pure GM not american GM but Opel. But now has made its way to a global platform. So you both are right and wrong

As far as the Ecotec engines go the saab variant is a 2.0L engine where most american versions are the Ecotec 2.2L I do know the new Saturn ION Red Line Edition will be using a supercharged 2.0L from opel and not the 2.2L that has been used in the other vehicles

So that should clear everything up :)

Well there arent very many people that can delete threads/ posts I know I can in this section but im the moderator this is what I think happend...it has to do with the server switching over. They had to switch to a backup version of the forum I imagine which got rid of some of the more recent posts. I noticed that too because there were about 10 replys to different threads that I had to go back and redo. But the new server should be a lot better and thats worth the change. I however wasnt online for several days because I quit my job and had to get a new one so I never read any of the orignal replys after I posted that info
