i dont know a lot about performance so i have a few questions... when you order exhaust from say pfyc or drspeed does that all come with piping? cuz it doesnt say what size and i was wondeirng if you need to buy it seperatley? and how come ppl have differnt brands of exhaust/mufflers doesnt the muffler come as a part of the exhaust? and if it is for a grand am how come ppl get it installed for lik $100-200 shouldnt it just bolt on pretty much? and whats catback? does that mean its bent for you already?
thanks ahead of time

Any full exhaust you buy is a cat-back. Meaning it comes with piping from the catalytic converter back, muffler, and tips.
The reason people have different brands is because they like the sound. Only Borla and SLP makes pre-fabbed cat-backs for the GA. So some may change out the muffler for a diferent tone.
Some people get it installed because they are uncapable of doing it themselves. But what I think your talking about is people who get a custom-fabbed exhaust, which run $2-400.
Hope I answered what you wanted to know.

yea that helped a lot... i was thinking slp cat-back. im in an auto class with lifts so i should just be alright doing it there ? i dont need any specialty tools do i?
and when you order exhaust how do you know what size piping your getting?
i want something louder then stock but too obnoxious would i be better off with just a differnt muffler?

If you want something a little louder, but not too obnoxious, slap on a MagnaFlow muffler....It'll be cheaper than a whole cat-back system, and it'll give your car that nice, deep tone....I just put one on my '04 GA and it sounds great.

In my sig i have a sound clip of a flowmaster 80 series. All i changed was the muffler.Got it off Ebay for $76.00 shipped.:D

03grandam is right, his flowmaster sounds great, so does the magna flow, but what is your defintion of too loud? the slp cat back is also a louder muffler, the kit comes with 2.5" piping, the borla I believe is 2.25" . I, like you, did not want anything too loud either, I went with the hooker muffler, nice deep tone, but not too loud. Listen to the flowmaster the magnaflow, and I'll leave a link below to listen to the hooker, I do reccomend having the resonator removed. Goodluck in whatever you choose.....

Also, if sound is your ONLY concern then a muffler is great. It will boost performance some but not much, a cat back exhaust however, will give you greater gains in performance of the vehicle, especially if you do an intake to compliment it.;)

it all needs to be welding after its installed rite? im sure that sounds like a real newb question lol. but im a pretty decent welder and i have all the equiptment at school to get it done
and what type of welding should i do? MIG, TIG...?
djdanger
09-18-2006, 07:10 PM
The welding is not the hard part, I suggest you let a PRO install it. There are some tricky pipe bends that have to be made, unless you have pipe benders at your school, it is gonna be a bitch.
Most shops around here anyway, braze it in.

Although, once again I believe the pre-made cat-back systems that SLP and Borla make come pre-bent and ready to install...can someone who has one of these confirm?

Yes they come pre-bent. It hooks up to the flange behind the cat. I have the SLP and i love it. I took mine and had it installed for 40 bucks
since my bolts were so corroded i couldn't get a socket or wrench on them. They also welded the tips on istead of using the hangers, looks better. Kind of raspy i guess below about 2400rpm.

SLP's a great choice. For the install the only things you'll need are:
DW 40 (put this on now, those bolts that are from the exhaust piping to the cat were a real pain to get off)
Unless you have a full lift, then you'll need a saw zaw to cut it at so you can get the old one out.
New bolts (the ones that come with the SLP are too big, just run to the local hardware store and buy these for $3)
Only problem I had was with the bolts between pipes and the cat. They were so hard to get off I eventually went to midas and got them torched off for $30. Unfortanately, when I drove home I found out that they hadn't completely got one of the bolts and it was welding the 2 together....so thank god I'm strong and had a screwdriver handy. You never know what can go wrong when doing a car mod...lol.

The bolts are impossible to get off. It's a lot easier if you have a torch. I used a Saws-all on the bottom two then cut the pipe to get to the top one.
I cleaned out the holes with a 3/8" countersink and used 3/8" SS nuts and bolts for the new system.
The only other hard part of the installation was getting the pipe over the axle. There is a hanger on the pipe that can be trimmed to make it easier.

is this the resonator? cuz i dont see it on the slp pipe... i thought it was a smaller thing that went inside the pipe.

and should i put some high temp/engine paint on my pipes before i put them on? or are they stainless?

SLP is stainless...no worries there.

The part you circled is the resonator.
The SLP piping is stainless, that's one of the reasons that I wanted it. My stock piping was pitted and I knew that it was not going to last .
I sold my stock muffler to a guy who was turning in his leased car.

Evap emissions control is what the scanner at Autozone said he erased it and hasnt come back so really dont know exactly what it was. Car runs great so not worried about it.

do you have an EGR delete, or is your evap canister bad? =p or your EGR system might be plugged. Nice exhausts by the way.

What kind of muffler/catback would you recommend for a 94 GA? I love the sound of Flowmaster 80 series, but will that fit my car?

The 40 or 50 series is a much better application on the 92-98 chassis, since the mufflers are not traverse-mount. But... Flowmaster sounds awful on the 2.3. Borla (ProXS) sounds the best, second choice = Dynomax (Superturbo). There are several threads on this topic a search away. ;)

nice exhaust bud, the only thing I dont like is the raspyness. I just think it sounds off with it. Me, I just fell in love with the sound of the resonator, thats why I stuck it on mine
