my 90 grand am engine does not get hot. unless its hot outside. when its like 80 degrees outside, the temp gauge will be right about the middle where it should be but the colder it is, the colder the engine, when its below 50, it barely gets over the first or second line. it will idle to the mid mark even when its freezing outside but when i start driving it will go back down. i changed the thermastat twice. could the missing front grill be the problem? i tried cardboard over most of the radiator but didnt notice any changes

Question is.....do you have heat? If so...there may be air in the system that may need to be bled out. Or the temp sensor for the dash gauge may be on it's way out.

Sounds like your thermostat. cheap part, easy to fix. should be where your upper rad hose attaches to the engine. don't forget the gasket with the thermostat when you buy it. if you want all the steps and specs on how to do it buy a hayes or chilton Manual for your car. less than $20 at walmart

the heat barely works, i only get good heat when the engine is hot like after idling a while

Next time get out and feel the hoses. If they feel hot, then your heater core may be clogged. Not letting water run through it to heat it up. If the motor is truely stating cold get a higher temp Stat.

i'll check those. nobody said anything about the grill, so i assume a grill doesnt make that big of a difference right?

The missing front grill.....might slow it down some.
But when the motor is cold the Therm-stat is shut. As the motor heats up the Therm-stat feels it and opens up.
If you drive your car for 10 to 20 minutes the motor should get hot enough to open the Stat even with no grill. So it has little to do with it. Covering it would slow down wind moving by the raditor causing it to heat faster.
