Of course! The most obvious reasons are already stated above. We liked it, it suits our needs, and it suits our budget. There was nothing else on the market that offered as much practicality in that price range. And being a left-over 2006, the incentives and 0% financing sure help lower the payments. I still have the GA as my toy. :)

I take it from your response that you're not impressed. ;)

Nope, no AWD. Just a bare-bones base model Vibe. Needed something inexpensive, reliable, and practical.

No thats not it at all.
I was wondering becuase even with it being a left over 06 and 0% financing there are better choices that offer more room and living in canada have 4x4.
Of course these choices you couldnt get an 06 for what you payed for the vibe. They would be used (04-05). So im assuming you wanted a warranty.

Interest rates on recent used cars are terrible (9%+), payments would be as high or higher than that on the Vibe. Plus, nothing else we looked at gets near the gas mileage that the Vibe does. And frankly, we love it. :) 4WD would be nice, but again, there was nothing in our budget that offered 4WD besides maybe the Jeep Compas, but there is no way I'm buying a first production year again. And again, there aren't any 4WD cars/SUVs that offer this much fuel economy, yet still have as much cargo space. And yes, we wanted a warranty. Making payments on 2 cars, we can't afford any surprises.

Trust me, this was no easy decision, but we're very happy with our purchase. :)

Thanks Levey. It's OK, I guess I can't expect people who don't have a family of their own to understand. I never thought I'd buy a car like a Vibe, but needs change, and you adapt. And frankly, it's fun to drive. But it would have sucked to have an Auto in it.

Thanks, Chain. Being a family man I'm sure you understand. We looked at (gasp) minivans, and some small SUVs, but in order to swing the payments I'd have to trade in the Grand Am. And honestly, we don't need the extra capacity of the minivan 99% of the time. Sure, now and then it'd be nice. But for now it's overkill. The Vibe is the perfect size for us. Big enough to haul our luggage, water skis, downhill skis, camping gear, tools, cleaning supplies, everything I ever take on the road with me. I plan to use the roof rack, I had them throw in the cross bars in the deal. So now I can transport our bikes, use a roof-top carrier, etc. All things I can't do with the Grand Am.

Oh, and I can fit Evan's stroller and wagon in the back. 2 items that are a PITA to take anywhere in the GA/Sunflower.

I forgot to mention...

It's a base model, but this one happened to have the 7-speaker Monsoon stereo with XM. That little sub doesn't sound half bad. It's not my 12" MTX, but for a factory system I can't complain. Now to convice Karen to go for the XM subscription. :rockdude:

You have to be playing with the xm all the time. Make it seem like you can't figure it out. Then....Let her show you how it works. (insert wink here)
Once she thinks she has you on something.....she will want it.
Now...I don't know her. So that might not work. In my case.....that would work a hundred times over. lol.

In other words. If my wife thinks she has me out smarted.....I'm done.
I tend to run with that. lol.

very nice dude... Before we got the sonata's my mom was crazy about the matrix. we also briefly looked at the vibe but the matrix was a few thousand less.

we test drove the matrix and it seemed to have alot of nice creature comforts, the only down side is that the steering wheel feels like it is a mile away... It seemed to have a real perky engine as well... Hope she works well for ya...

sunrunner_pei
09-23-2006, 07:20 PM
Matrix was less?? Seems odd. Here it would be $4000 more (if you want A/C, no incentives on leftover 2006's), plus 6.9% financing. Payments would be $100 more per month and for 5 years as opposed to 4. But the Matrix is nice too.

Not to get into a debate over terminology, but the truth is the Vibe is not available in four-wheel-drive (4WD, 4x4) It's available in front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive.

Not a big deal I guess since not many people care and even car manufacturers are getting it wrong (look at the Toyota Highlander for example--the badge on the back says "4WD" eventhough it's an AWD vehicle :roll2: ). Still, the Vibe is either FWD or AWD; 4WD is not an option.

Anyway, congrats on the purchase Shawn! :)

while i agree with you one could argue that indeed all 4 wheels are pulling....or 4 wheel drive :D 2 wheel drive means 2 wheels pulling and 4 means 4 are pulling. when you have a awd car with 4 wheels then TECHNICALLY it IS a 4wd.

if i had a dollar for everytime i've heard this argument. that, and the "2wd is better than awd" argument

Manufactures are more apt to use the term "AWD" on SUVs, Crossovers, and other vehicles because the term sells better with women. However on trucks 4WD or 4x4 sells better with most men.

But all in all I like the look of the Vibe, just the extra plastic doesnt do it for me, with a little work it could achieve greatness... The GT is too peaky for my taste. Not really any power to speak of until north of 6000 RPM when it gets into lift. Sure, it's fast, but just not my cup-o-tea. I did ride in Mike & Cathy's, and with some mods the car will seriously haul, but still lacks that low-end grunt for hills, etc. And for $7000 more than I paid for this, coupled with not so great fuel mileage in comparison, not to mention sky-high insurance rates, I say "no thanks".

If the world was a perfect place, and I had lots of money to throw down, I'd have picked a different car. And sure, they cladding isn't beautiful, but the molding on the beltline sure does protect against door dings. And with this car spending a lot of it's life in parking lots, that's a very good thing.

BTW, just for comparison sake, we looked at the Matrix as well. I happen to like the clean lines better. But in order to get A/C, which was a top priority for us, we had to get either the XR model at a $4000 price addition, or the 'base package' for $3000 more. Add that with 7.9% financing, and you have over $100 more per month and an extra whole year of payments over the Vibe.

After having the car for over a week now, we're liking the car very much. Gave it a bath on the weekend, although it's raining today. I de-tagged it (removed the dealer sticker), attached the rear bumper protector, checked out the roof racks, and detailed/scotchguarded the interior.

I picked up a new 27" CRT TV for my sister. Had Evan with me, and was able to fit it in the car, along with him, plus leave room for all my groceries, and the front passenger seat was still empty. That TV wouldn't have fit in any other of my cars, much less leave room for anything else.

And believe it or not, it's fun to drive. Sure, you can look at the HP ratings and laugh, but don't be so quick to judge until you drive it. Sure, it's no speed demon, but it handles quite well, and is fairly zippy around down. A little sluggish on the highway, but not unbearable. It handles and corners well. And overall just 'feels' good to drive. And the gauge lighting rocks!

I know you guys were looking into the Mazda 6. If that's more in your price range, I'd look at it first. The Vibe is great for the price, but if your budget is higher, there are better cars out there. If not, and can live with it's limitations (Lack of power being the most evedent), it's a fantastic car for the money.

TA^Guy
10-16-2006, 11:51 AM
Well we aren't looking at new vehicles, the GA was our first, and maybe last brand new vehicle. IMO is a complete waste of money, only good thing is you can get exactally the options you want how you want it.

Lucky for us, RJ works at a used car dealership, so he's looking into certian vehicles for us. I might even goto a auction with him or so.

Not to mention they have some of the lowest rates around. Thats why I purchased a used truck only 3 years old. Would have bought a newer one but couldn't find one with the options I needed to have for a decent price.

0% is nice. I think my truck was 3.1%, our GA was 1.9% brand new, but we refinaced when were purchased our house to 5.9% but it only incressed the price a few hundred over the course of 2 additional years. Which is the only reason why we still owe $3500 on it right now.
