at the moment, quaker full synth 5w50, but only cuz it was on sale for 25 bucks (normaly more than 50) for a case of 6 bottles (946ml each) at the time of my last oil change so why not? normaly, i'll use castrol 5w30 in the summer, and a good brand 0w30 in winter (potential -40C january manitoba mornings require it :D )

Thats just pushing the limit if you ask me. Although I do run a ton of highway miles (130 mile round trip to gf house) thats still pushing it for me even though im running full synthetic.
EDIT: Wow just wow. So I think Ill be switching it up next time I change my oil.

After seeing how crappy that Fram looks Im going to be switching the next oil change for sure. I cant believe that Fram really sells that crap.

fram does it because of a simple reason - creative marketing.

Back when i was in my early 20's thats ALL i used, i thought
FRAM was king  , i used it on every thing.
then when i got my first computer reading up on these
web sites and seeing pics. of this stuff it made me a believer  .
This is a list of a FEW filters that i like to recomend to people
but you can buy what ever you want. :)
Mobil-1
Purolator
K@N
WIX
NAPA GOLD(Wix makes N/G)

Wix (which I bought at Carquest) I was not too happy with...using K&N now.
I had 10/30 Castrol HM oil in the engine for the summer and using the Wix, during every cold start the oil light would come on for like 2-4 seconds and I could hear my poor dry engine waiting for the oil.
Now using the K&N and Castrol High Milage 5/30 for the colder months and don't see the oil light any more. I am blaming the filter because I use 10/30 every summer with various filters and never had a problem before.
Sorry I don't have much time to read the links posted earlier, but how do Purolator and AC Delco stack up?

Must have gotten a bad ADBV(anti drain back valve) in that
WIX because i've use MANY of thos without any problems,
there a very good filter high quality.
Purolator is another very good filter, again very high quality
with a silicone ADBV.
filter media is vary good, some people don't like to run a Purolator
in the winter because it filters so good there afraid of restriction
of oil flow, but i've never seen any hard proof of this.
i've used these also with great results.
the problem now with AC(i used to use these too all the time)
is to many different companies are making them(i think 3)
the ones made by champion labs are the good ones(the label
on the filter is a sticker not painted on)but the ones made
in Mexico(the label will be painted on) are just plain junk,
poorly made,, bad ADBV. there's more to it but this gives you
an idea...
K&N is a great filter too well made great media,
but i think it's a little over priced compared to what you get
when there' s other filters out there that will perform as good or better for cheaper...
**edit**
here's a few links with good reading and pics of filters, you shure
can tell the good ones from the bad..

Though I agree with you to an extent, not every Fram filter is bad. The Fram Extra Guard/"PH" (orange filters) and the other filters based on the PH filter (the Double Guard/"DG" is just a PH filter with teflon; I believe the High Mileage w/TRT "HM" filters might be a similar situation, but I'm not sure)--those ones are all poor quality filters.
The Tough Guard/TG filters are similarly constructed but have a much better filter media and I don't think they are all that bad particluarly if the filter is changed often (as in 5,000km).
Their Extended Guard/XG (previously also called "X2" in the US and "The Synthetic Oil Filter" in Canada) filters, on the other hand, are quite good from what I know. They are well constructed and have very good synthetic filtration media. Personally I would put them on the list with the other filters you have listed above (Wix, Mobil, etc.). I've seen the Extended Guard filter tested and also cut apart in an oil filter review on the net, and it scored quite well in that comparison.
The difference is completely seen in the price as well. A PH orange filter from Fram costs like $3-$4 or so. An XG filter costs over $10--it's around the same price as a Mobil 1 filter. Just because a company makes one bad product doesn't mean all their products are bad, particularly considering the price points of good and bad oil filters. Long story short you can't really expect to have a great oil filter when you're paying $3 for it.
Fram also makes "Racing Oil Filters" (also orange, lol) which I assume are actually good filters, given their application. They are meant for racing though so the filtration media is more for flow than for filtration, so they probably aren't a good idea for daily driver applications. I don't know much about these but I'd think for their application they are probably good filters.
I've been using the XG filters for a while now, though I'd never even think about putting an orange Fram on my car. I will be using Mobil 1 for the next couple years though, as I bought like 4 of them when Advance Auto Parts in the States had them for like $8/each ;)

And i too agree with you to a point, :)
yes the TG does have better media than the rest of there line, but the problem i have is the price they charge for there products when there are better filters out there that filter better and do allot better for even $2-3 dollars(i.e wal-marts super tech).
And the Extended Guard/XG has a Combination synthetic glass and cellulose media it's not fully synthetic.
if someone wants to use a FRAM that's fine with me
i just hate there oil filters.
plus i just can't get over there damn cardboard end caps that
restrict flow.
glad to see your going to use a M1 :)

there's alot of crap out there on the car market,
advertising is key for all these companies.
the best thing to do is to research for yourself
most big good companies do their own testing and the information is available.
always read the approval labels, there is stuff out there that doesnt even have labels of approval... so that gives you an idea.
one suggestion to canadians, buy canuck products as you will always save a buck or two, and quality is the same or close.
i dont know what the car ran before it got to me but im running
mobile1 5w30 on a motormaster filter.
