View Full Version : Trannsmission Problem after Rebuild

I have a 93 GT with the 3.3L automatic. The tranny has been slipping on me from a stop for about 3 years where it would rev right up and then grab with a tire chirp. I usually just changed the fluid yearly and added some Stop Slip as a band aid and everything has been good. A week ago I decided to finally have the transmission rebuilt as well as the torque converter. Picked up the car and things did not feel right. It severely lacked power. Took it back and the shop believed the torque converter was rebuilt with a 3.1 and not the 3.3 so they pulled the tranny out again and re-did the torque converter. Picked it up yesterday and it still lacked power. Then when it warmed up I thought it was slipping from takeoff again. Maybe not necessarily slipping like it had before, it actually felt like I was taking off in second gear. I had a Ford tranny mechanic friend of mine take it out for a drive and he confirmed it had a tranny problem and it also felt like it was starting out in second gear. Once it is over 10km/h the car goes like snot. RPM's won't get over 2k on takeoff. I took it back and the shop is trying to tell me it is my engine, that the 3.3L was a problem motor, they run rough like they have a miss and a miss will trigger a knock and a knock will cause it to miss on takeoff. I have always known this motor to have a minor shake to it. It has since the day I took it off the lot new, but the transmission has never been affected. By the way, the power lag gets worse when the car is warm and when it is warm, it smells like a clutch/fluid burning. I'm in for $1700 on this rebuild and not sure what to do now. The car is currently still at the tranny shop and the shop is convinced it is not a tranny problem.

Sounds like the shop is making excuses not to fix the transmission. Bottom line... the engine ran fine when you brought it to them.

The transmission shop should have a tachometer, that is if the car already doesn't have one. With that you should be able to see the shift points. And also know if or not that it is or not going into 1st gear. The next test would be pressure tests. Lots of things other than the transmissions mechanicals will cause such problems. The many sensors, wire connections, even battery cables can cause what you would think an unrelated problem.
Not sure if the 93 is electrical shift?

The car does have a tach and it shifts like a champ through all ranges after it is doing 10km/h. If I apply brake and accelerator, it won't get over 2000rpm. I was asked about the obvious things like wires, plugs, injection/fuel system cleanings, IAC, TPS. All done within the past 6 months. The battery is also new. Computer done last year. The slip problem has been a problem for 3 years, but minor. My problem is the vehicle was fine when it went in a week ago. The problem was a tranny slip when the vehicle warmed up. Only occured in stop and go traffic or after a highway drive. The slip is now gone, it just labours on takeoff like I was pulling a 40ft trailer, and RPM's cannot climb enough to even get a chirp out of the front wheels, which this vehicle has had no problem in doing for 13 years. I think it is a case of a tranny tech who can't swallow his pride for a second and think it might be feasible that something went wrong with the rebuild. The fact that you can smell clutch/hot fluid might indicate that something is not right. Called the shop today, no one has even looked at it.

My parents had their tranny rebuilt and someone reused an old part and they had nothing but trouble with it afterwards. The kept going back and stressing the fackt that this is not how it was before, etc etc and they finally fixed it. I would continue to talk to them and make sure it gets fixed...Don't leave it too long either. Then I'm sure they will use an excuse to try and get out of fixing it. I would also find out what exactly they replaced/rebuilt...because you never know.

go back a second or third time, staying polite and courteous....if after the third visit they don't comply, I have three words for you SMALL CLAIMS COURT. A customer of mine had a similar issue (not tranny, but shop didn't wanna fess up) and the second he mentioned court, they acted a little different....needless to say his car was repaired and he'll never go there again...

Here's the update guys. The shop called me today and told me not only did their supplier build the torque converter wrong once with the 3.1 model, but they did it the second time as well. The shop called me and said they ordered a third, but from a different supplier. Also had to rebuild the tranny a second time as it burnt one of the clutches. They tell me it is running mint now. Just going to pick it up and take it out for a test run.
