You know the stuff - thick as molasses? I've used it with great luck in the pumped up smallblock in my Camaro... so I tried a bottle in the 3100. Seems to have smoothed idle some, definitely quietted the engine measureably WHEN WARM, and seems to run smoother.
However, its getting cold here and this morning i started it only to notice the ever so familiar "tick tick tick" that these engines are known for.... only instead of disappearing immediately, it stayed noisy for a good minute or two (till that thick oil warmed up I guess)...
I'm thinking the next oil change is gonna be 0w30 for the winter to avoid this and make warm ups easier. Anybody have any insight?

A high quality synthetic oil will be better in the long run than adding additives to regular dyno oil, and probably cheaper too. Look into Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic.

I use EOS from GM. Dad works there and he claims that it will keep ur engine clean inside. I do u Lucas gas stuff tho!
0W30?? Might as well pouring water into your engine, but it is your call...
I'd at least use a 5W oil, synthetic or not.

It depends on where you live. I live in southern Illinois and there are a couple times every winter where I wish I had 0W, but 5W suffices. I'd imagine if you live further up north and have consistently cold winters 0W might be worth a look, but replace it with 5W as soons as it warms up enough to change the oil without shattering your drain plug gasket.

well thats the thing...I don't think you guys realize just /how/ cold it is here. Its already dipping below 0c at nite. With the lucas stuff in the engine, and a cold nite, it sure makes for a noisy engine for the first few minutes :) Oil change places here offer 0W30 as a common choice...
its not so bad if a WARM day in winter is -20c :) We've seen days on end where the AIR TEMP is -30c or colder...forget the windchill that puts it well into the -40c range....

0W-30 sounds like a splendid idea then, just to get around the need for oil additives get an oil formulated for high milage vehicles. It doesn't sound as sexy as synthetics, but it will smooth out your ride.

Don't use the Lucas,it's not needed.
Use the 0w-30 and sleep good at night,
i've been using 0w30(M1) for years in the winter for excellent
start up protection , it's a great oil.
can be used all summer too...
