i looked through all the threads on here about cold air intake and decided to purchase the CAI prelude intake off ebay for my 95 3.1L and make it myself. I ran into a problem though....after cutting out the fenderwell a little bit i discovered that the filter is too large for my car. has anyone else out there with a 95 3.1L done this and if so what size filter did you use......thank you very much....

I'm using K&N p/n KNN-RF-1039 - it will fit all 94-95 fenderwells, doesn't matter which engine. Summitracing.com has them.

i hope youre not trying to drop it through the top with the filter on. you need to remove the fender liner and put hte filter on through the bottom.

^I think he means the filter protrudes into the wheelwell / tire too far. The 92-98 gen needs a small diameter filter in order to fit without rubbing against the tire. Not much room in there...

well in that case, yo might be able to reposition the tube to make it fit. i switched between an elbow coupler and a straight coupler to get it the fit right. also, if you use an elbow, then the bent part can go in the bottom, allowing the filter to be angled away from the wheel area. just an idea.

no....not that dumb....i had my car on stands and the entire wheel well out trying to get it to fit, the filter that came with the kid just pushed the wheel well out so far that i couldnt even screw it in and the filter is smaller than the one that i have on my ram air right now....i just need a small one like the k&n in the pic above....thanks for all the input though....the part number is a big help...thanks

The angle isn't the problem... the filter diameter is. Even if it is angled away, a 5" or bigger diameter filter physically doesn't fit between the liner and fender/support metal... even if it isn't connected to the CAI pipe. The part number I posted goes down to 3.5" at the top of the cone... which barely fits (I noticed mine has some flattened spot from rubbing the wheelwell liner)

The one I have still pushes it very slightly... just be aware of that when putting everything together. You may have to play with the angle slightly too... but it will fit... just tight.

You're better off ordering it... I've never seen any autostore stock K&N cones with a coupler (all K&N cones there were the drop-ins for stock airboxes that use a round filter). You'll prolly find APC and other junk cones in the rice isle, but even those are usually all a standard 5-6" cone.
