Im looking for a good cold air intake for my 96 grand am se with the 2.4. I know they can be expensive so how hard can it be to make one on my own. When I do, I want to get rid of those black air boxes on top of the engine.

Not hard, any exhaust shop can bend the piping you need. You also need silicone couplings and clamps. And a filter. Do a search and/or check the forums on your specific engine to know if you need to worry about sensors.

There are several companies that make both WAI, and CAI. Do some searching...

the cheapest way is to amke one, look at my cardomain to see what it will look like, it works jsut as good im sure, also i can tell you jsut about step by step how to do it and also what youll need, and youll have to get rid of the black air box, you run the piping down thru there, youll also have to take the plastic piece out from the fender b/c thats where you filter will be, well jsut chek mine out and see if thats what you want and i can help you out

oh and the way i did mine the price would come out to about 60 dollars without a k&N filter, or around 110 with one, there are lots of warm air intakes on ebay, that where i got the main piece, BUT a warm intake wont really help power, it will give you some nice engine noise, but i think mine hurt my power, just droping alittle more on you

so you are saying its not worth getting, I heard that before when I called up autozone to see if they had any intakes. I think the guy that I was talking to has a 2.4 grand am and tried a cai because there is always a grand am in the parking lot. Anyway, then should I even bother.

cold air intake will help, its a great mod to start with, i was refering to jsut a warm air intake, where your air filter is just sitting in the engine bay, if you go with the cold air you relocate your filter into the fender, youll definatly feel a power increase from that, but just getting a warm air/ ram air looks alot better and can be easily modded into a cold air intake, thats what i did with mine

I think I will get this http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=AVM%2D22%2D446P&N=700+4294908153+4294869663+4294819504+4294925239+ 4294813803+4294924746+115&autoview=sku
and extend it into the fender like mentioned above. Does anything need to be relocated. I know the washer tank is at the bottom of the fender, will this get in the way.

yeah it will, all that black plastic crap goes, but you wont miss it, there is already a black plastic take in the fender where the filter is, you just take all the black plactic stock intake off, and youll already have a hole going into the fender, and like i said theres some kind of little container that has something to do with the intake, youll take it out, but as far as your windshieled wiper fluid its fine, your filter willl be setting right behind that
