Hey im new to this forum and i have a 1996 Grand Am SE. It has the 2.4L twin cam and its a 5spd. I have a highflow cat and a short ram intake. Im looking for an exhuast but i dont know what to get. I was thinking just to keep the piping i have now and just get a shop around here to make it dual exhaust with two flowmaster 40 series mufflers. But if any one has any ideas or thoughts let me know please.

I have a Borla but I like the flowmasters as well.
Magnaflow.com makes some decent mufflers.
If you do a search there is a post on here where we discussed this previously.
Good luck and let me know what you end up getting.

keep in mind that you wont see much gains with stock piping. you are better off with 2.5" piping.

True, dont be a dumbass like me and get the 3 inch pipe. I had to go back and get smaller piping.

yea for a 2.4 you dont need over 2.5 unless you are running FI. rob runs like 3" i believe, and he gets 300+ hp in his 2.4L.

On a mild-modded 2.4 (NA with bolt-ons), I still say 2.25" is more than adequate... especially over the stock 2.0" piping.
Flowmaster sounds raspy/bad. Borla (ProXS) and Dynomax (superturbo) are the best sounding mufflers on a 2.4.

:agree:
I'd venture to say you'd probably lose power with 2.5" pipes until you went the forced induction route, if you ever did. I'd go with the Borla ProXS personally. I've used every one of those muffler brands (save for magnaflow), and the Borla was the best sounding, hands down.

I think the stock size is 2 inch is it not guys ? Im not sure but thats what mine was.
I was stupid and went with 3 and lost a lot of power and ran like shit in a sense, and I got the 2 1/2 and its nice
Or you could do like some of the ricers and just get a straight pipe in place of the muffler :)

If the exhaust is rusted enough for the muffler to start falling off, the piping needs to be replaced too. The inside of all the piping will be full of flaking rust pieces... not something good for exhaust flow.

Not advised at all. Straight pipe on this car would be louder than most manhole cover fartcan mufflers I've ever heard. This thing is loud as HELL when there is no muffler on there. Unless you want people to know where you are within a 2 block radius, I highly recommend you don't do that.

ok thanx so im thinking just getting a magnaflow or flowmaster muffler and putting a tip on it and calling it good. Its alot cheaper then most things and all.

^If you're going for that cheap route, the dynomax will be the cheapest choice and sound far better than a Flowmaster. They can be had for $29-39.

ok well if my pipes arent bad and dont need replacing then what do you think about flowmaster 40 and keeping the stock piping and all. GOOD IDEA BAD IDEA? Let me know i really need this done. And if not how much do you think it would be to get 2.25 piping and installed?

Flowmaster will sound raspy, and costs twice as much as Dynomax.

Don't get a flowmaster. It's going to sound bad. I got a flowmaster super 40, and at an idle it sounded heavenly, but once the exhaust system is under pressure from actually driving the car, it sounds horrible.

if your on a budget get the dynomax. if your not get the borla pro xs. stock is 2", and you cant tell a difference if you keep that so change your piping to 2.25"
