Alright im in some sort of a dillemma. My 2001 GA 2.4 has 129,000 miles on it. I love this car to death. I love the way it looks, runs blah blah. I started a new job not too long ago and im making more money now than I was before. I would love to start putting money into the engine now that I have it to spend, but with 129K on it would it just be a waste of money? How much longer do you think this engine will go for?? Should I spend money on this car or should I just use it over the winter and buy something new next summer? Whats your opinion?

I am still upgrading at 114000. If the car was well maintained it should still have alot of life left in it. Just stay on top of all required maintenance and routine repairs. I myself plan on replacing the twinny when she lets go but I hope that's not for a long time.

The smart thing to do is to continue to drive it. Any money you put into the engine will be lost. It's a five year old car, it has about two, maybe three years of useful life left at 26,000 miles/year.
Maintain the car, put the money away that you would have put into engine mods plus and extra you have from your new job. You can then trade it in and have a decent cash deposit to reduce your payments.

If I were in your position with the car running well, Id do this.
Buy a motor from the wreckers, they're dirt cheap.
Build it up with forged internals and lower compression pistons.
Get P&P head job.
Buy a GM charger and a 2.6" pulley
Once your current motor starts to go, slap your built motor in, bolt on the blower and youll have a fast, reliable motor.
Since the motor isnt in the car you can take your time with the build and add parts as you have the money for them.

you'll exceed the limits of the gm charger before you exceed the limits of the stock internals in most cases. even if you get the charger ported and polished, and drop to a 2.6 pulley and use alchy, you'd still be safe on stock internals as long as you have a good tune.
on the other hand, you could raise compression on the engine and get a lil more power out of it. Don't lower the compression if you're planning on using the gm charger though.

The engine will last as long as you want it to. Oil is the key factor for most of the internal parts. Keep her freshly lubed and should last a little more longer.
I say keep her and do what you can since like the others said, won't get what you have put into it so mod the hell out of her.
OR save up for another 2.4 motor from the junkyard, perfect chance to build it up before you do a swap. This is the route I plan on doing. Then you'll have the original motor to take parts off and have remanned and/or reman the parts then sell for more $$

hey ive got to add my piece, im at 122,000 , running strong and still doing some small mods, the things with cars is unless your building on up jsut to sell you are going to lose money, but why not enjoy it? also i see alot of twins with 180,000, like ryan said just take good care of it and it will be around for awhile

I've got 240k on mine, still modding it. Don't plan on stopping either.
If anything breaks on it, just replace it with a better, aftermarket part.
It's alot cheaper then car payments, and more fun too!

Hell Im at 131k on my 3400, with a bad ps pump and leaky LIM gasket and was still modding. Now Im prolly getting rid of it cause It was my first car and I want something newer with more potential. Hell 129k isnt that bad for your 4cyl, Id say mod it. Maybe even some suspension mods lol?
So how you liking that strut bar so far?

I love the strut bar... but like you said, now i want to do more and more. It gave me the bug too!! haha. I want to lower it really bad. Will that make it more difficult come snow time?

It depends how bad it is where you live. Most people dont wanna lower their car because they think they will scrape too much, when really the stiffer springs help you to scrape less.

not really. I even have a body kit on mine and lowered 2inches. Just don't go out on days that you have over a ft of snow:lol:

its the best moto to go by when in the automotive field. Why put another part you know will most likely fail in the same amont of time and fuss with it. Id much rather put a stronger part in and enjoy the car longer with less down time:cool:
