View Full Version : 80 Series on a 3.4?

I was browsing the Flowmaster website looking for the 80 series, and when I got there it said for V8 only. I've seen some V6's with this muffler, and does it really make a difference what engine you have flowing into the muffler? Also, is there anything special I need to look for when buying a muffler for my car?

Im not sure, but I did it anyway but with a flowmaster 40 series delta on a 2.4. To hook mine up all I did was cut the old muffler off and clamp the new one on and put some tail pipes on. I love flowmaster, this muffler made my car sound pretty good, Im happy because it didn't sound like a ricer, someday I plan on doing a full exhaust and actually welding it together. The only thing I can think of is that you will have low backpressure, but isn't that what you wan't, but just not to low.

also is this a cross flow muffler

this is what I got

If it is the cross flow I think you would have to use a 90 degree after the rear.

I'm looking to use the crossflow (transverse) so that I can have dual-dual exhaust (dual tips on each side). If anybody has a better transverse they'd like to suggest, I'm all ears too. Also, would it sound like crap to put a glasspack in place of the resonator and then have straight exhause "y'd" off in back?
ETA: This is the muffler I was looking at: 80 Series Crossflow Muffler (http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/products/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3295)

is the stock size 2 1/2 inches or are you expanding the pipe. As far as using the glasspack, a cherry bomb on a 93 grand am 3.1 doesn't sound bad, but you might be able to fit a better muffler in the tunnel under the body and run tail pipes to the back. Not sure though, never tried it, just a brainstorm. I was thinking of that when I was putting the muffler on my 96 ga se but not sure how it would turn out.

i have the flow80 on mine and i LOVE it. i left the pipe stock after hearing mixed reviews on how much air the car actully pushes thru the pipe... the butt dino says more is there or freed up but what ever the case, i love it, sounds good, seems to pull harder in higher rpm's... get it if you can is all im saying :)

What size is the stock tubing on a 99+ SE? I'll need a coupler for that to the 2.5" inlet (smallest available). Also, would it be easier to just do a cat-back with the stock size piping, do 2.5 back, or maybe just put a bigger pipe and coupler where the muffler is now? Thanks for the help you guys, and for anybody else interested in this, the muffler with 2.5 inlet, 2.5 dual outlet is 79.95 at Summit.

stock piping is 2.25". i had the 80 series on my 99 SE 3400 and it was nice. they say its for v8 only because that muffler is made for the camaro Z28. mufflers are not engine specific.

I emailed Flowmaster, and they said the 80 works on V6, there's just more resonance, so the guy suggested running a resonator (stock anyways). I'm gonna go this route as far as muffler, anything to watch for when getting a shop to put it in (as I don't have any pipe or a pipe bender, plus my welder is out of gas).

you are 16 and you can weld?
a good muffler shop can do it no problem.

What's suprising about being able to weld at 16? They offer welding classes to high schoolers here, but I didn't take that. It helps to have a dad that's into cars and rebuilding, he teaches a few things.

Might as well get a custom 2 1/2 inch cat back while you are cutting all that stuff up. I mean you are adding the bark, might as well add the bite to go with it right?
It will probably save you money in the long run anyways.

Alright, 2 1/2 sounds good from the cat back. A car guy that I was talking to today said that it would sound good to have the 80 plus a Cherry Bomb in place of the resonator for less noise in the cabin. My dad says that it isn't a good idea though because he figures that it will mess up the sensor readings(not sure how, since it's after the O2 sensor and it would probably be around the same backpressure as the original resonator. Any thoughts?

youll be just happy with just the muffler... and if your doing the 2.5 inch back, leave it as just the pipe/muffler....... trust me, youll be more then happy!!!

I've heard that without the resonator the cabin noise level goes up a bit, and I don't want that. Having a Cherry Bomb won't really make too much backpressure but might help with keeping some cabin noise down. It could also change the tone of the exhaust to a new sound so it's different than the other GAs with the 80.

I know a guy that has a cherry bomb and man it sounds horrible with the 3400 engine. The cabin noise is unreal and he still has the resonator on. Seriously dont go this route unless you want that inport tuner sound.

Okay, glasspacks are out of the equation then. Will the cabin noise be anything significant without a resonator? If it's just a little rumble I won't hear it, the radio's always on.

its not really that bad unless your stepping on the gas, then you will hear it... outside the car its got a nice low rumble.

hahah a cherry bomb instead of the cat... thats just classic man...
it never occured to me... haha i have a 92 dodge i can try that on.
80 series is also meant for v6's
alot of the 3800 community runs these.
this muffler was marketed towards camaros/firebirds both engine
trims v6 - v8. the 80 design is for cars that need the muffler sideways sort to speak- so it fits many other cars stock.. and u can fit on of these on any car period.
i have an 80 series on my bonnie (3800) im very happy with the grunt it gives it, im still at stock piping and no cat.
however from the comparisons i have seen, magnaflow gives it more of a sports sound than a loud grunt.

Uh... Carlos, I said the Cherry Bomb instead of the resonator, there's a difference. These cars have a cat, resonator, and muffler. To replace your cat you'd need the O2 delete unless you want skewed readings messing with your fuel mix. And if you have to get emissions inspections you would fail without the cat in there.

ahh i didnt read it properly,
the 02 after the cat is probably not even usefull, its the first 02 that matters. Im driving a car with no cat as we speak, never threw codes, and yes it has a 02 at the EM and one after the cat.
Im sure the one after the cat is just to tell u ur cat is messed up, i doubt it has anything to do with fuel mix.. as i keep on checking and im running perfect.
and as for emmissions test, here where i live.. u have to pass them once ever 10 years. so for a car like a 94 that just passed its emmission test in '04 and its not scheduled again for '14... a cat delete is worth it.

In my area, we have no emissions tests as far as I know. Might also be the only vehicle we've owned longer than 5 or so years are classic cars, which are exempt from quite a few regulations.
