View Full Version : Blown or Loose?

One of my front speakers makes a loud annoying rattle at any type of music now (even Lynyrd Skynyrd with bass turned off). It used to rattle with high amounts of bass, but never this bad until the end of last week. Is my speaker blown or did it just work its way loose? I want to upgrade those speakers anyways but only when I can afford it and after the cold air box and vinyls.

Is it an original speaker or something that was installed? If its OEM, I highly doubt it would have worked itself loose. Probably time to Replace it.

could easily be blown...I had a customer request replacement speakers just the other week cause one of them was "buzzing" badly. Turned out it was a paper sticker on the door worked loose, and it was buzzing against the sheetmetal ;)
Moral of the story - get in there and LOOK! It could very well be loose...just takes a 1/4 turn on a screw to be loose enuf to vibrate.

ive also seen it where the speaker wire was up against the back fo the cone is making a rattling sound. i agree that you need to get in there and see whats up.

oh yeah - the good old JL Audio "tinsel leads whacking the back of the cone" trick...thats a good one :) although I've never seen it on a small speaker (xmax tends to be so small its not a concern) but shit you never know!

actually ive seen it where a person did the install themselves and they used way too much speaker cable. there was soo mucbh exatra cable that it bunched up and was up against the back of the cone.
doesnt happen often, but it does happen.

So it sounds like I should take a look in there and most likely upgrade. Would Polk db5250's sound any good on just the stock HU for now?

they will be decent but be careful since the distortion from the stock deck could blow the speakers at high volumes.

I don't think I have to worry too much about that, I listen to rock and I don't cruise around blaring my system at a level harmful to pets or small children. If I wanted to make it louder I could always change the fade so that it's more focused on the rear speakers. Are the Polks alright with a decent amp, say, a smaller Rockford?
