Just out of curiousity, will the wonderful[/sarcasm] chicago winter, effect my subwoofer at all? it being a made of a composite plastic and rubber surround. are there any precautions i should use or should i just take it out?

I left my subs in my 95 during a New York winter. Yours weather is probably similar. I see no reason to take them out.

I live downstate and though it doesn't stay as cold as Chicago, there aren't problems I've had. Having the sub in my trunk does help with traction quite a bit, so that is a bit of an incentive to leave it in.

it wont effect it at all. the subs that are made for cars are designed to handle the large range of temps that a car sees. in the summer out here, cars get over 150 degrees inside, and ive never had a problem, and same goes for cold weather.
if you are worried about the cold weather then dont bump the sub until youve run the system for a few minutes to allow the voice coil to warm up.

yea Ive left subs in my car over numorous winters. Some got pretty cold and had no problems. Just turn your heat up in your car,run the music low for a little bit then once the inside of the car has warmed up turn it up some. Rubber and cold don't mix but once the whole inside of the car gets warm your fine

Yep I live in MN get's plenty cold here and the chrome on my audiobahn amps must hold temperature like crazy, but i've had no problems. I wouldn't advise playing them loud cold, that could be bad and sound like ass to boot, I just play mine low, turning it up another notch every minute or so until the car is warm like stated above.

Some info from the rec.audio.car FAQ:

Pretty much what everyone said already, but just a citation/source of sorts I guess.

I live in Canada and our winters are brutal and with all the systems I've had in my cars I've never had any problems.

yep just like vanishingImage said...you can leave your subs in your car over the winter no big deal...just dont start them out at an EXTREMELY high volume level...let them warm up on a low volume level and you will be perectly fine...and i own a shop and thats what i always tell customers when they buy subs and i live in iowa...no problems yet

that being said.
unless its cheaply built, you can wang them as hard as they are when they are warm, as when they are cold. i do it daily. and by no means is my system cheap!
