Don't get 4x6, get 6.5"...you won't be sorry. They sound way better than 4x6!

Get components if you can afford them...they will sound much better.

5.25s are also good and fit with an adapter for $20 a pair with no problems. I am picking me up some Polk DB5250 component speakers, which I hear are great, to go with my new Kicker 650.4 amp and my new JL 12w3 sub. WOOT!

Memphis PRC63 6.5" 3-ways sound freakin amazing for the price ~ $110/pr. They have swivel mid/tweeters and a lifetime warranty if you get them from a dealer!

Just a small mounting plate to hold the larger speaker, no heavy modification. You will be sorry if you go with 4x6 then hear a set of 6.5s...Spend the extra $20 on the mounting adapter plates.

I tried a couple different 4x6's, then wised up and replaced with 5.25"... sounds much better.

Polk audio is awesome, Love the sound and quality, I have the polk/momo 6 1/2 components and would not trade them for anything (Except the new SR series)

but they are costly just like every component speaker on the market!

component speakers - tweeters are seperate from the Midbass woofer, they come with a external crossover!

Coaxiel speakers - Tweeter is mounted to the Midbase woofer, some coaxiels come with a external crossover depending on power needed to push!

I would also suggest going with at least 5.25s. The install is very simple and the sound difference really is impressive. I run the Polk 5.25 component set (that was mentioned above) and I love them. Reference this (http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=43771) thread for 5.25 speaker install photos (including mine, on page 2) and discussion. The coaxial install will be even easier since you don't have to deal with crossovers or separate tweeters.

Most importantly though, give us a budget to go on. We can make all the suggestions in the world, but one man's budget speaker can be another man's high end.

Also, here (http://www.caraudiohelp.com/newsletter/coaxials_versus_components.htm) is another explanation of coaxial vs. component speakers.

It's rather subjective... I always go audition speakers before purchase.

Budget? Seriously, it's very important.

Matt is right though, it's importnat to go listen to as many speakers as you can and decide what you think sounds best. People like different things and depending on the sound you're trying to achieve you could like any number of different brands. A lot of people will just tell you what they run, which may not lend itself to your application or sound preference.

Here's where I got mine, but I ordered them right at the store rather than get them online. The Autozone website doesn't allow for clickable links so here's how you get there.

Autozone (http://www.autozone.com)
click "Shopping" on the left side
enter your zip code
Under Accessories click on "Electronics & Audio"
Click on "Speaker Adapters"
You want the "95+ Cavalier & Sunfire

Here's the whole insane url. If it'll let you, just copy and paste the whole thing.

I don't know why everyone says 4x6 suck. I have a pair of Pioneer 3-way 4x6 and they sound great.

I guess I'd have to have something to compare against.

^ :agree: Without a doubt one of the most important things in speaker selection is that you like the speaker you're buying!

I second this as well. Budget is another really important factor--you can only buy what you can afford. And what you want to end up with is the best speakers for you in the pricerange you set out for yourself. Keep in mind to get decent sound out of most decent speakers you're going to have to separately amp them (HU power blows for the most part). So figure in the cost of amplification at some point (whether you plan to buy a separate amp now or later).

I'd say start auditioning speakers and then move to in-car auditioning (if possible) with the ones you like the best. If your budget is over $200 US I'd say start checking out dedicated car audio shops for brands you won't find in big box or mainstream retail stores (like Best Lie and the like). Not saying you might not find the speakers you like best at somewhere like Best Lie, but if you neglect to take into account other brands you may miss out on something you'd like better.

Another pointer, if you go auditioning, don't let any salesperson "sell" you on anything. Every salesperson out there is going to try to get you to buy something--that's their job and their bottom line. Don't forget that. If you agree with what they are saying on your own, that's fine as well; but if you don't, then don't let them sell you something you don't like that much.

PS: Shad0wguy... I've heard some 4x6s at low volumes that do a suprisingly/interestingly decent job. However that's at pretty low volumes. Most 4x6s do suck (I hate to say it) and even the ones that do surprise you, they can't handle much power and aren't well behaved at even moderate power levels. You really should check out some larger speakers and you'll see the difference. Then again maybe you shouldn't because you're going to end up wanting to spend more money on new speakers hee hee ;)
