I've just searched the forums regarding these. But I have yet to see a comparison between Cold Cathodes and Neons. I already know some of the differences, including the obvious that they are similar but different methods of lighting, but here are my questions regarding them:

I'm hearing that Cold Cathodes are becoming more popular than Neons. How is this so?

What is the main difference between them, specifically? Like is one brighter than the other? Neons got their name because they use Neon gas (which I don't think most neons do anymore. Some I've heard use a mercury vapor). But what do Cold Cathodes use since a Neon is a type of cold cathode?

And probably my main question about the two is: What is the load difference (amps, watts) between a Cold Cathode and a Neon of the same size?

Any comparo between the two is helpful.

cathodes are definitely brighter, thinner, and much cheaper. theyre main purpose is for computer case modification, but they can be modified to work in a 12 volt system. oznium.com sells a 12" pair for like $6.50.

the power and ground goes to a transformer (which brings the down to 9 volts i think), and the tubes plug in to the opposite end. they can be used externally also with he help of some silicone

cathodes look amazing
if I were ever to do something like you are thinking it would be cathodes all the way

Cathodes are great because they are brighter than neons in most cases and they shine 360 degrees, unlike LED tubes. Another option are LED Flexible Strips from Oznium.com. Their directional unlike Cathodes but they give off a great glow for their size. Here's a picture of my car with one on each side.

i thought the transformer converted the 12v to something like 600v

Cold cathodes and neons are very similar. The primary differences are the way they're powered, how they're housed in the tubes, cost and brightness. The way they are configured allows cathodes to be brighter than neon tubes as long as they are installed and powerd properly. Cathodes do contain a "neon" tube but that term (as you mentioned) doesn't always mean they contain neon gas.

The transformer used with the cold cathodes (at least the ones at oznium (http://www.oznium.com)) convert the 12 volt DC current from you car to 650 volts of AC current to power the cathodes. A set of two cathode tubes running off a single transformer from oznium draw .7 amps of power. Neons generally draw more power though the actual amount may vary by brand.

If you still have questions, take a spin through the oznium.com forum (http://www.oznium.com/forum/).
