Well the time has come around for me to finally do the tint on my car. The tint is currently only on the back two doors and the rear window. I'll be getting all 4 doors rear window and new eyebrow on the windshield. Now my tint is purpling so that's my insentive to get new tint done. Plus I wanted my front windows tinted.. I don't care about tint laws here in illinois cause those other guys driving $25,000+ cars can have it so can mine. Either way what would be a good % to go with? and also can my tint be removed from the rear window WITHOUT harming the defrost lines or am I screwed along those lines.. because that is the only thing holding up this project is the defrost lines being destroyed upon removal of the old tint and the 200$ price tag for the entire car.

dam 200 bucks is high. I donno maybe prices are different around you. I always felt 20% tint was a good number. not to dark but yet still hard to see into.

Removing tint.
Ammonia is the key... soak a rag and coat the tint. Then do it again and again till it is soapy like soaked.
Here is the key, you need to seal it like with a trash bag. I cut a lawn and leaf bag and taped it around the whole window.
Leave it on at least 6 hours. Over night would be even better.
The fumes seem to cause it to release easyer.
I use a razor blade to start one end and SLOWLY peal it off.
If it starts to split, take your razor and start the end that split and try to keep it as big of strip as you can.
Clean up with laqor thinner to remove the excess sticky goo.
Then clean up the window with window cleaner.
The shop putting on the tint will reclean the window anyway because most window cleaners have ammonia in it and that is a big no no with tint.
Hope this helps... Ammonia is what my tint shop uses to remove tint and they charge almost as much to take it off as to put it on.
I have done this and it works.

If your worried about the defrost lines coming off take it to someone who will garauntee the tint removal, then get your tint done, i got mine ( pas. front...rear, driv. front...rear, back w/vinyl strip, and front window) done for 175.
As for the tint, i would say 25-30, cause i have a white ga and 20 is a lil to dark for me. But im not doin my tint again :D

here is a contrast shot against something white. The tint is like this on the rear doors as well as the back window. Does anyone know what % this might be?

in this second shot the door on the left (right passenger rear door) is showing the actuall look of the tint it self. And the passenger left door is the shade I would like it to be when in sunlight.

that's not 20% by far.. imo that looks to be 30 because you can see through it clear as day from the back to front photo
*edit* i vote for 25%...my :penny:

yea its too light, probably 30-35%.
I say 15% if its legal, its block out a lot of lot, is legal in a lot of places, and doesnt produce as much of the 'mirror' effect like most 5% does

heres an easy solution mark.. what is the purpose of the tint..
- To make the car look better?
- To block view of you (so u can throw the finger and laugh)?
- To keep the sun out of your eyes?
- Other...

Well i have 5% on my back window and sidelites and 35% on the front windows. Its perfect really. You cant see in the back but you can see out it perfect and the fronts arent too dark that they mess up your night vision at all.

Thats the back window at around 9:00 in the morning. Thats about as bright as it gets here and as you can see its pretty good.

That's nice, If you have all the windows tinted, then it will appear to be darker, less light is getting in. BTW, How did you do your tint, It looks sweet.

Pictures will not really give you a good idea what the tint will look like.
Because of the way the pic was taken. I can take a pic and mine will look limo black. Then take one at another angle and you can see through it.
As far as damage to your defrost lines Ammonia will not hurt it.
You can jack it up with a razor blade but ammonia is not a problem.
The link grandamfan99 is basicly what I said to do.

Limo tint is the tint you cant see into but looks nearly clear looking out, right? or am i thinking of something else?
I hate illinois tint laws, windows behind the driver can be blacked out but no tint in front of the driver.

If your ride is white...consider the reflective tint. I don't know if it is limo tint or what. But it leaves your window looking silver/white from the outside. I think that looks sweet on a white car.
One comment about the eyebrow. Consider a shorter eyebrow, one that only covers the dark factory strip across the front. Saves ur neck when you are 1st at the light. Also, if you get shorter windshield wipers, you can also save your eyebrow from getting those dark wipe marks. I have, like, 11'' wipers on mine (I think 11'').

^If the eyebrow is done in tint(witch I think is what he's doing) it should be on the inside of the car, with would not be affected by the wipers. Also you should be able to see a traffic light through the tint.

I didn't know people refered to it as an eyebrow when it is on the inside. My bad.

Will be going with 20% on both the rear and front doors and eyebrow will be waiting to do the rear window in the spring when I have time to work on it.
