my sister just acquired a '93 grand am se. she said the key gets stuck a lot and she forced it back to the off position to be able to remove her keys. now when she starts it, the keys spring back to off position. the only way to keep it running is to manually hold the key in the run position. any idea as to what this could be?? i was thinking ignition switch possibly? she needs this car to get to school and such, so any help would be much appreciated!! TIA.

Well, the problem at first was prolly a faulty cylinder; once she 'forced' it, I think she broke the ignition switch itself.

They are two different units, one inside the other.
Now I think she needs both.

First, try just squirting a bit of WD-40 into the cylinder (where the key goes).
Allow to soak a couple minutes, the push the key in-n-out several times.
Then, with key in, turn from 'off' thru 'on' and 'start', then back to 'off' and 'acc'; repeat a few times.

This *might* loosen everything enough for decent operation.
WD-40 isn't a permanent lubricant, it's a solvent for dissolving rust and crud.
If this works, then allow the WD-40 to dry-out for several days. Provide permanent lubrication with graphite powder (available at Ace Hardware, and the lock department at Lowes/HD, and some auto parts stores).

If this doesn't work:
* Get a Haynes manual, she's gonna need it
* Follow the instructions and remove the old assembly; get new replacement from NAPA/AutoZone/Checker.
Don't even think about a junkyard part; most are in the same or worse condition than hers.

Good luck,
-Rick
