if possible i need some quick info. my kid hit the backend of a mustang going down interstate 81 in pa sunday night. i havent seen the car yet, going down in the morning to survey the damage. he said it wouldnt shift into gear to get it off the road (automatic) its a 97 and i wanted to know what both airbags would cost to replace . i bought the car for 3500 a year and a half ago , just did the lim gaskets and with 90k on it runs great. any advice on salvaging it would be helpful. i understand the junkyards only give about 100 bucks a car . i heard some outrageous prices on airbags.

You will need to call around to salvage yards for prices. You will need to replace all the sensors and SDM (SRI diagnostic module) also.

If he's in NY, its illegal for a salvage yard to sell an airbag here.. pretty sure its the same in PA too. As the cars come in the bags, get sliced immediately so they cant be sold.

Interesting. I have bought used airbag components with no problems here.

You could probably get replacement bags from a dealer.

Anyways, by the way things sound, the car is probably in bad shape... at interstate speed, with the airbags deployed and a severly damaged transmission, he must've taken quite a load of damage.

For '99 SE Seems reasonable (but $75 shipping???)

I *think* that in addition to the 'module', you also need some sensors (which kinda self-destruct when they sense/fire the airbags).

If you haven't seen the car yet, I'd be more concerned with the rest of the damage. If the hit was enough to set off the air bags, then the rest of the damage is likely to be severe... and it most likely isn't worth fixing severe collision damage on a car worth less than $3000.
