I haven't done this in awhile, but I "think" the cover will come off without touching the timing, but you cant remove the cam or the lower part of the tower without taking the timing out.

well i have the cover partly off... but it seems held on by the timing side... i dont want to pry up too much on the 4 bolts used to pop the cover.... there are 2 bolts that go through cam pulleys ( according to chiltons) i was wondering if those went into the cover... i dont wanna f things up more than what they are... thanks for your help!

I have a question. Why would you want to remove them?
The whole front end of the engine has to come off to get them off.

Yes all the front end comes off to do that.
If it was me I just take outa the car. Too tight of work area other wise.

yea, i've done this to a couple and both were out of the car and it still was a pain. in the car would be difficult and really, really time consuming.
