In our 2000 GA SE the transmission is shifting out of first gear into second around 3500-4000 RPM's and its not a hard shift, but its not smooth if that makes sense. I know that sounds like its contradicting but its not a hard jerk or hard shift.

I was wondering if this is normal and what could be causing this if it isnt.

Also what does everyones GA shift at in that age bracket ?

Thanks in advance.

my car started doing that, took it to the shop and my transmission ended up being dead. search up my thread on slipping transmission, there are a number of possible problems listed there and what to do about it

My car is a few years beyond that age bracket. The trans still shifts like the day it was purchased, lol. The transmission shifts according to the way you're accelerating. Accelerate lightly and it can shift out of 1st quite quickly, accelerate more agressively and it can hold first all the way up to the redline (given a WOT).

If you're just accelerating normally/gently it should not be holding the gear until that high an RPM--that signals a problem somewhere for sure. I unfortunately don't really know what the problem is/could be. You might want to wait for more replies or take it to a transmission shop for a diagnosis. It's probably better to get it diagnosed sooner rather than later as a small trans problem can easily turn into a "transmission-replacement" problem later on.

have a shop drain the transmission fluid, either you are low or you have none and are grinding the gears (thats what the problem was with mine) so it may be time for a fluid change or fill up asap

Thanks Aaron. I did a search and its just like what your saying. I have an appt. to have the trans. fluid replaced tomorrow. Thanks for your help and Ill keep you updated. I know mine in my 93 had pieces of metal in the fluid the guy said. 20k later its still running.

Yeah, Its still running though lol I drove it tonight after getting it lowered its put up right now so it will be fixed before I bring it out again in the summer. Im trying to get some stuff done to it.

Im expecting to have to put a new tranny in and I have one off of the parts car I bought. Its already removed and in the storage unit

Small pieces (dust & chips) are normal, it's the big chunks that you have to worry about. They always say they found metal, it's like your air filter, they'll pull it and show you all the dirt even if it's only been on there a month. I've taught a lot of women ( who do tend to get this pulled on them alot) to hold it up to the light and see if it's really due for changing.

Yes, it's normal. My 2000 shifts like shit but it hasn't gotten any worse in the past 30,000 miles.
